Oh, sorry. I didn’t see a way to switch to frames. I did my best to get the screen grab as soon as the counter went to 29 seconds. This is right before the fade begins.

First about the fade to black…this time around I don’t have any control over that one. This was an odd job in the sense that we did all the animatics/previs and then handled all final compression and output of the masters. So this was unusual in the sense we didn’t’ do the edits.
Back to the topic at hand…
I couldn’t get the same results I got yesterday with the horrible compression, possible because today in an attempt to save time during testing I only compressed last 10 seconds or so where the major issue was. My guess is this would change the GOP structure???
I compared turning off the “Auto Key Frame on Scene Change” setting on one compression and on another I left it on and changed my keyframe rate to 10x my framerate.
Turning off “Auto Key Frame on Scene Change” made the greatest difference. With this off, areas of high detail (leaves of trees in an aerial shot) were better preserved than the compression with “Auto Key Frame on Scene Change” on but the key frame rate increased. There was more blockiness in areas of gradual color transitions (a small amount of fog that was partially shaded by a mountain).
In H.264s in Squeeze I have the options of Apple, Main Concept, Sorenson, and also a Sorenson MPEG4 Pro. I’ve heard Dicas’ implementation is good. I know you’re a Episode guy, buy do you have any insight/thoughts on the Sorenson MPEG4 Pro?

Similar issue here. Sent some footage off for color correction and they’re saying it was given to them interlaced instead of progressive. I’m looking here judging by my eyes and it definitely doesn’t look interlaced.
Unfortunately I don’t have a solution yet other than previewing in QT and making sure the deinterlace option isn’t checked as I scrub through areas of high motion.

4Mb isn’t necessarily too small. What you need to do is find the right quality to file size ratio that suits the needs of the client.
I just compressed four 60 second spots and the were all around 3.6MB. Keep in mind that they are only 392×294.
Realize that high file size doesn’t necessarily reflect level of quality. Some codecs are more efficient than others.

Thanks again Daniel. I guess if I stop and think about it, it makes sense that the peak shouldn’t be more than twice the average.

As for the settings in Sorenson, the “Data Rate” section…I assume when doing VBR that is the average data rate? Is there no place to set the minimum?

Source is 1080 output is 720. My math is right though correct? 7mbs=7168kbps
I’m compressing FLVs, 2 flavors of MPEG-2s, 2 flavors of WMVs…at lot of different needs for this project. I know with this particular WMV compression it’s going to be used for HDTVs.

If you install it, “x.264 encoder” will be added as an output option. For example, in QT Pro, if you go to File>Export and select QT Movie, when you go to the “Options” section you will have the choice of using the x.264 encoder.
