Yeah, like Walter suggested make sure that FCP is connecting back to the right clip. I’ve had problems before w/FCP was connecting to the original media and not to the Color-rendered media. Also, if it’s only a single clip you could just find it in Finder and drag it into FCP.

I’ve experienced Color doing both but I haven’t looked into why.

Yeah, as has been said 5.0.x was designed to work on PowerPC-based Macs (G4s, G5s, etc.,.). When you run it on an intel machine the computer has to emulate a PowerPC machine which means the computer gets taxed more and things don’t always work properly because emulation isn’t perfect.

Has the deck worked before and it’s just not working now? Have you tried selecting “Refresh A/V devices” in FCP under View? Have you tried power cycling the computer? Sometimes FW decks/cameras are finicky about the order in which things are powered up.

I don’t think any distortion is going on. For example, around 53 seconds in w/the guy flexing both the foreground and background images look the same. I think all they did for the background footage is take two copies of the same clip, crop each clip down the middle and push the clip of the top half of the frame to the top and the clip w/the bottom half of the frame to the bottom.

While I totally understand how much of a PITA all these HD formats can be (I routinely mix and match a half dozen different formats where I work) I also understand why there are so many formats and the growing pains the camera industry is currently going through right now. I think in a few more years things will settle down a bit as flash storage will get big enough, and cheap enough, that shooters will be able to have long record times using high quality I-frame only codecs recorded onto a medium that is inexpensive enough to be shot once and shelved like videotape. But until we get to that point there will be more compromises to deal with. But, hey, at least it’s not as bad as when all production was shot on film. 😉

Every format that’s out there today exists to fill a hole in the market. Which on one hand is great for shooters because they can really pick the best tool for their budget and needs. It’s not so great for post though.

EDIT: OT, I don’t have a problem w/the B’cast safe filter following the order of operations rules like the other filters do, but having it be a sequence setting (like it is in Color) would be an improvement.

HDV to ProRes via FW only works as ‘capture now’ and it does not include source TC, IIRC.

I don’t know who first coined the terms up, down, and cross conversion but like Walter I’ve always seen Up/Down refer to going between SD & HD and Cross for going between HD formats. At least in the US those seem to be the commonly used terms in my experience.

Almost every time I’ve seen problems like this it has been related to media corrupted in some way. Are all the problematic clips from the same tape? You could try recapturing or you could try opening the problem clips in QT, export them same as source (in this case DV), then bring them back into FCP and see if that fixes the problem.
