I’ve exported projects using FCP’s uncompressed codecs and handed them off to our compression team (who are running PCs) w/o a problem.

I’ve used a number of decks & cameras on a number of FCP systems (everything from a 5yr old G4 to a new Intel Mac) and, as far as I can remember, the image shown in the Log & Capture Preview window has always been jerky and degraded. As long as the capture quality is fine I wouldn’t worry about it.

Yes, we are using Final Cut Pro so this is very good news. Awesome.

What format did you shoot on? If you shot DV25 and are capturing via FW then you can only capture at DV25. If you try and capture using DVCPro50 the computer will look for a DVCPro50 deck (which it obviously won’t find ’cause you are using DV25). Also, you mentioned using CD audio. On import did you change the sample rate of the audio from 44.1k to 48k?
I can guarantee you that the problem is not because you are using FW400. FW400 and DV were pretty much made to go together and I regularly capture DVCProHD via FW400 and have no problems and that’s 4x the data of DV25.

Another scenario where capturing whole tapes is beneficial is if you have more bays and people than decks. I worked at a post house for a while that mainly shot on BetaSP but started shooting more on Digi and even some HDCAM and while each of the 12 bays had a BSP deck there were only 4 Digis and 2 HDCAM decks that had to be shared. So the AE’s would keep the tapes rolling while the loggers subcliped out the ingested footage. At my current gig our workflow is such that it’s faster for me to capture whole 2hr tapes in 20min chunks and then scroll through and drop markers on what I need than to log & capture ahead of time.
While I personally prefer logging then capturing, I’ll use whatever workflow is best suited for the project.
