Apple intermediate codec for PC
Posted by Philip Johns on January 23, 2007 at 2:17 amHi.
I’ve recently made the switch from PC to Mac and purchased Final Cut Studio. However a lot of my software is still on PC, such as Canopus ProCoder and Sorenson Squeeze. When I’m working on a HDV 1080i50 project if I directly export or export using the intermediate codec, both of these files can’t be recognized on PC so that I can convert it to various formats. Is the intermediate codec available for download for PC?
Many thanks,
Philip

January 23, 2007 at 12:02 pmI guess you want to encode for web or dvd with pro coder. Then try exporting to an uncompressed codec. Pro coder should be able to deal with it. (but think about a workflow to get your file to the PC first)
Or try staying in the Studio Suite and use compressor, but it is definitly not as good as pro coder.
Why are you working with the intermediate codec anyway? Its crap and you can work HDV native with final cut hd. -

The Apple Uncompressed Codecs are also unavailble for PC but you can use the AJA or Blackmagic codecs. Just install them on both the Mac and PC. They are functionally equivalent to the Apple Uncompressed Codecs.

I’ve exported projects using FCP’s uncompressed codecs and handed them off to our compression team (who are running PCs) w/o a problem.

January 23, 2007 at 7:20 pmI would be interested in how they were able to read them without one of the codecs I mentioned installed. The Apple Uncompressed 8 and 10 bit codecs are installed only by Final Cut Pro and are not available for PC. Do your PC compression guys have a capture card of any kind?
Not disputing you, just curious.

I used the 8-bit uncompressed codec and the PCs don’t have any capture cards installed. Could the codec come as part of QT or Sorenson Squeeze?-A

January 23, 2007 at 10:44 pmProbably Sorenson, as Quicktime Pro does not install it

note the installed codecs at the right. no mention of uncompressed.

January 24, 2007 at 1:48 pmI tried using the studio suite but, as you say, it’s nowhere near as good as procoder. For instance if I encode to MPEG 1 I can’t seem to find a way of setting the dimensions of the output. This is a problem as it seems to be locked to an aspect that’s 4:3 where I’m working with 16:9. Uncompressed is also a problem as this churns out a whopping 11gb file for a 2 minute clip. A lot to get over a 100 base ethernet network! This is how I have worked around it, but it’s VERY time consuming. I haven’t tried exporting an uncompressed file straight out of FCP, I converted it first. I’ll try that too. I guess a workaround would be to swap an external firewire drive or something… now there’s a thought :)… still a bit of a bugger that I can’t work on the native HDV output file though.

February 1, 2007 at 3:51 pmI’m also working with FCP and encoding in Procoder 2 and I had the same problem with getting files back and forth. Try this:
https://lifehacker.com/software/networking/geek-to-live-fast-one-wire-network-ip-over-firewire-173973.phpI have my Mac and PC connected via firewire 800 and the transfer speeds are about 9000 kb/s.
Good luck.
