‘Cash cow’ wouldn’t be the first words that come to my mind for apps that have always sold well below fair market value, IMO. I mean, since about version 5 FCP has really gone toe-to-toe w/Avid (an obviously much more expensive solution), Color cost $25k before Apple purchased it and included it in FCS2 at no extra charge, Shake received big price cuts under apple as well. Taking a look at the FCS suite I can’t think of comparable apps I could get for anywhere near the price.
Apple’s ProApps are high profile, and they can sell hardware, but I don’t think they are big money makers all by themselves. I kind of liken it to car companies and auto racing. Ford and Toyota don’t get into racing to get rich they get into racing to show off, get headlines and as a developmental proving ground.

The new ProRes are very cool and I can’t wait to see how they perform. It’s a shame that I won’t be seeing it anytime soon ’cause we have lots of G5s at work that won’t get replaced until next year. 🙁

July 23, 2009 at 8:56 pm in reply to: At this point I wish Apple would sell off “Pro” apps[Michael Sacci] “FCP has been on a 2 year cycle for several releases now, the only difference way we saw it months before it shipped. FCs2 showed at NAB 07 but didn’t ship for another month.
FCP 2 thru 5 saw updates every year (including the big, free .5 update FCP 4 received) so it’s not like it would be unprecedented to get another significant update in 2010. Honestly, if the updates we got today are the only significant updates we get until 2011 that’s pretty disappointing, IMO. I mean, should it really take Apple four years to release v2.0 of Color?>
How many apps get a total rewrite? If FCS gets one look for it no sooner than 2 years.
“
How many apps are the corner stone of the suite and based on code from 1998? 😉-A

I mean, how many companies can take an app like Final Touch 2k (aka Color) that retailed for $25k, do some tweaks, and include it in a software bundle at no extra charge?
I honestly believe we’ll get a from-the-ground-up rewrite of FCP after Snow Leopard is done. I was just surprised Apple released a new version of the suite before then. But I guess Apple felt they couldn’t wait for SL since the suite was already more than two years old. That’s also why I think the price dropped too.

July 23, 2009 at 7:18 pm in reply to: FCS3: new features vs. more refinement, missing the boat on integrationThis all feels like a solid .5 update but not a full blown version update which might be why Apple dropped the price from $1399 to $999 (raise your hand if you purchased FCP stand alone for $999 back in the day). After 2 years I’m a bit underwhelmed especially given the advancements that Adobe and Avid have made in the same timeframe. Don’t get me wrong, there’s new stuff that makes me go “Oh, cool” but it’s stuff that could’ve been rolled out in a point update, IMO.

If you re-export the source clip same as source and drop that new clip in the timeline I bet it will play fine under the graphic.

Or hit shift+F and click “yes” when FCP asks if you want to add the clip to the project.

No need to apologize Walter. Good things come to those who wait, right? I will circle three weeks from today on my calendar though. 😉

Hate to buck the trend here but I wish Walter would disappear.
So he can finish up his next tutorial DVD for Color. 🙂

Personally I’d cut first and color later. I tried coloring first once and it didn’t work out ’cause as the cameras zoomed in/out and reframed shots the image changed enough that a one-size-fits-all CC approach didn’t work out.
