What kind of TV are you watching the DVD on and are the TV and DVD player properly setup (i.e. you don’t have the ‘zoom’ function on anything like that).

Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father ( https://dearzachary.com/ ) has a lot of single camera interviews and a lot of jump cuts but they aren’t distracting, IMO. The first couple got my attention but after that I got used to the ‘style’ and the rest were pretty transparent. It also helped that Dear Zachary has an incredibly compelling narrative.
If a jump cut works, it works. If it doesn’t work cover it up.

I believe it was the EditDroid (a Lucasfilm experiment at a nonlinear editor) that used RotJ footage to create a standing-room-only presentation at NAB back in the day.

One example would be reality TV shows. I worked on a show once that shot about 2500hrs of footage in 10 days. All that was later cut down to 9 or 10 episodes.

De-interlacing as a last step isn’t an after thought. It’s a good way to do things for a few reasons. First, FCP de-interlacing isn’t that good and other programs, like Compressor, will yield better results. Secondly, de-interlacing before hand robs you of image quality right of the gate. Lastly, de-interlacing all of your raw footage before editing is a waste of time, IMO, compared to just de-interlacing only what was used in the final edit.
Interlaced footage is, well, interlaced so there probably is something setup different between the two machines if you aren’t seeing interlacing on both of them. If you have your Viewer or Canvas window set to 100% FCP will show both fields where as if it’s set to anything other than 100% it will only show one field.

Don’t worry about the interlacing while you are editing and have Compressor (or your encoding software of choice) do the deinterlacing.

I agree w/Shane. Only buy what you need when you need it (especially w/how quickly computers drop in price and jump in power). And LA really sucks right now job wise. I know guys that have been editing in LA since the ’80s and they are having problems finding work and this causes a cascade effect. When the people at/near the top of the ladder have to step down a rung to get work that tends to push everyone else down a rung and the new guys on the bottom rung get completely pushed off. Even in good times it takes most people a few years in LA to get traction career wise… You just gotta try to keep your head above water and ride out the rough times.
I came out here the first time under the ominous skies of guild strike threat and right before 9/11 so I can understand being all revved up w/no place to go. Look at the bright side, this is thinning out the competition. 🙂

Apple bought Shake and then killed it so I don’t think they’d be in the market to repeat the process with Nuke. I’d long assumed that Apple killed Shake because it was too much of a niche market for Apple w/customers that expect a lot support and openness w/the venders they use. That’s not exactly how Apple rolls as we all know. This post from Ron Brinkmann (one of the guys that created Shake and has long since left Apple to go work at The Foundry) just solidifies my assumption.

FCP, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, etc., all have pretty broad appeal because every project pretty much needs editing, sound editing/mixing, and gfx of some sort but not every project needs advanced features like Shake has. This also makes me less hopeful that Color isn’t going to avoid the same fate eventually (especially given only a .5 update after two years).

Definitely a big improvement although I don’t think mixed frame rates or mixed frame sizes was addressed and the ‘interlace bug’ still seems to be around too. Oh well, I guess they had to save something for v2.0. 😉
