  • Struggle getting DVCproHD project export right

    Hi all,

When I play a dvd of my project on a tv it the resolution is way off. It’s not like it’s cut off the sides just outside the titlesafe area, but its cutting it off about 1/4 on both sides, leaving me with only the middle 2/4’s of image. It now looks like a clip that would be scaled to 150 in FCP. This is my first time working with HD material and I must say I am not that experienced in FCP.

The footage has been shot on a HVX200 using 720p at 24pn and 30pn. The projects have been edited on a DVCpro 720p 60fps timeline. Aside from the fact that I might should have converted footage to one common framerate, my trouble right now is getting the quicktime export to play at the right resolution on a dvdplayer.

I exported the project as a selfcontained quicktime movie and then made a dvd in iDVD. Is my understanding correct that going through Compressor and then DVDSP would have gotten me a better picture, but would not change any resoltion and cropping? Or is my problem accuring because I am skipping nescessary steps that are done in Compressor?

I hope that my question makes a bit sense and I am not missing important info in my post, but I have been pulling my hair out all day trying to get this thing right. I really need to get this project to play at the same size on a dvdplayer as it does on my mac.

What kind of TV are you watching the DVD on and are the TV and DVD player properly setup (i.e. you don’t have the ‘zoom’ function on anything like that).

    3.2GHz 8-core, FCP 6.0.4, 10.5.5
    Blackmagic Multibridge Eclipse (6.8.1)

Try using Compressor and DVDSP. From your DVCPro HD sequence export a ref or self-contained file using Current Settings. Bring that into Compressor and use the DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes setting. Also use an AC3 setting (Dolby Digital Professional 2.0) for your audio. Go to the Ken Stone website and find how you set Compressor’s ac3 encoder properly. You’ll end up with an ac3 audio file and a mv2 video file. Open DVDSP and import both. Drag both to a track, select 16L9 letterbox, set it as First Play and then Build/Format the DVD. If you need more details you can find them by searching the Cow.

I guess I am dumber than I thought I was. It turned out the dvdplayer had a setting for 480p,720p,and 1080p. It was a little more fancier player then I was used to. So it was set at 480p and just turning it to 720p did the trick. I hope it will play the same on more regular players as well. Thank you both so much for the advice.
