Use your iPhone for scratch V.O recording
Posted by David Roth weiss on July 29, 2009 at 6:58 amRather than worrying about fan noise and the like when recording scratch track, I’ve begun using the Voice Memo app my iPhone. I adjourn to a quiet room with the script, record the tracks, and then send the file to myself via email right from the Voice Memo application. The mp4 audio file does requires rendering on the timeline, but it actually sounds pretty darned good, certainly good enough for a high quality scratch recording. If you’ve got an iPhone try it out sometime, you’ll be surprised how good it sounds.

July 29, 2009 at 8:13 amI have never understood why people tolerate having the computer with all its noise in the same room. A better investment is remote cables for control and monitoring so the computer gets moved next door. Then a cheap USB mic will do the same thing straight into FCP – no render.
No offence David, but this sounds like searching for usefulness for an expensive phone, rather than addressing the real problem of having a proper monitoring environment free from noises.

Great idea!
Wondered if you’d seen the inspirational “making of” video at:
https://the88.net/love.htmIndie band “The 88″ use the iphone to record their next single!!!
Lots of fun using a recording app called”Fourtrack”.
Could inspire some interesting ideas for shooting and editing video on it…. hey what about a FCP iphone app….!!! LOLEnjoy,

July 29, 2009 at 2:09 pmYeah I’m waiting for the first full feature film that’s been cut on the new iPhone editing app, Kind of like that one movie that was cut on iMovie years ago. What was it “Deep Blue” or something like that?

“Michael, Michael, Michael —
Of course you are correct. And, while I’m at it I guess I could also build an entirely new studio on the DRWFilms backlot, get myself a corporate jet, and use the Panavision Genesis camera on documentaries as well. However, I love a good low-budget solution when I discover one.
Actually, there are quite a few sound issues at my new studio that eventually need to be addressed, but the for typical scratch track V.O., the iPhone is surprisingly good, warmer sounding than you might imagine, way easy, and just about as good as the USB solution I was using for the same purpose.

Michael, he’s talking about a scratch track. Who cares about background noise, etc… for scratch tracks. If he was speaking about recording a final VO, then yes, noise is an issue.
For scratch tracks we use pretty much anything that’s handy. The laptop mic, Snowball Mic, Logitech USB headset, etc… Quality doesn’t matter for the scratch. When recording the final VO’s we use a nice AKG standard mic in a quiet room, pop filter, reflection baffling, etc…
The iPhone is just another handy dandy tool to record scratch tracks where. Kind of neat actually.

No, just having Color support speed changes and still images was enough to make me giddy….
I’ve played with that audio memo thing on the phone though and it is fun, especially when you’re traveling in the car.

“As we’ve discussed before, that was the one thing holding me back from using Color on everything I do. I sure hope it works as billed…
