I have Final Cut Pro 6.01 running on OS X 10.4.11.

Every project I do has scan lines.

I’ve tried fiddling with the sequence settings and changing the Field Dominance from Lower, to Upper, to None. Changing the Field Dominance doesn’t do a thing. Changing between the Scan Mode of Interlaced and Progressive doesn’t make a difference.

Applying the De-interlacing effect makes the footage useless.

When I export to QuickTime files and upload them to the Internet, the lines are still there.

    I’m currently working on a DV/DVCPRO-NTSC Anamorphic 16:9 project.

Of course everything looks fine on a tube television, but on computers and flat screens, the scan lines are obvious.

    What is the solution?

Don’t worry about the interlacing while you are editing and have Compressor (or your encoding software of choice) do the deinterlacing.

I would really like to get this problem straightened out, and not deal with it as an after thought in postproduction.

Everytime I capture footage, I get scan lines. But if I capture the footage on another computer, with the same hardware and version of Final Cut, I don’t get the scan lines.

    I can’t imagine it’s my computer… I just can’t figure out what is wrong.

De-interlacing as a last step isn’t an after thought. It’s a good way to do things for a few reasons. First, FCP de-interlacing isn’t that good and other programs, like Compressor, will yield better results. Secondly, de-interlacing before hand robs you of image quality right of the gate. Lastly, de-interlacing all of your raw footage before editing is a waste of time, IMO, compared to just de-interlacing only what was used in the final edit.

Interlaced footage is, well, interlaced so there probably is something setup different between the two machines if you aren’t seeing interlacing on both of them. If you have your Viewer or Canvas window set to 100% FCP will show both fields where as if it’s set to anything other than 100% it will only show one field.

Okay. I will do those things.

I just don’t understand why I can digitize the same footage on another computer, and the scan lines cannot be seen. (Even when both Canvases are set to 100%.)
