How big is big ? We are working with huge projects as well, and my feeling is that projects getting about 200megabytes is getting close to the limit. Annoying that Avid is so much better working with big projects.. oh well. This is an old complaint.

(this will be the norwegian version of the Bachelor.. lots of multicam, and alot of color correction with Looks)

We have done lots of stuff on dvcpro hd as well, and it has worked great. We’ve had stability issues with xdcam hd with our last production, but some of the problems have been solved with turning off thumbnails in the timeline (problems with gop and thumbnails I guess).

Some of our editors have been complaining that multicam and xdcam hd is very buggy, and that fcp will randomly crash. Don’t know much specifics, but I just wanted to know if this was a know problem.

Insane. Apple is earning alot of money selling FCP and powerful macpros with it. An FCP update will surely be available next NAB.

THANKS !!! We only work with 16×9 these days and it’s a blessing to finally have it changed once and for all. The default should be changed, 4×3 is so 90s.

It depends abit on your budget. Xsan – Promise Raids and xserves is Apples prosolution. A bit pricey, but it works great.

I totally agree with Mark with the workflow. I have been working on alot of realityshows in Norway (bachelor-age of love – bigbrother etc) and the editor is extremely important. A good editor, that works without being told to what to do all the time, is absolutely necessary. Since there is so much material and short deadlines, the editor is more or less a co-director. I think alot of the hardcore realityshows are MADE in the editing suite. Other realityshows that are closer to script is more of a directors job.

Just an opinion. Survivor was first made in sweden, and is in my opinion not as “reality” as other concepts more true to life.. (alot of my friends have worked at “european” survivor and its more like a fabric that anything else. Many countries shooting at the same time)

June 24, 2008 at 6:02 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro unusable for big projects?

    Blablablablafaster drives etc,etc,etc.. ram… versions..etc.

the truth: FCP handles big projects badly. When we edited our feature we came across some of the same problems, however not so severe. When you get a lot of small clips in your project, fcp gets more and more unpredictable. I have written about this a couple of times. It is really annoying that Avid handles this so much better. FCP is fantastic, but big projects are one of it’s biggest weaknesses. When we had screenings, we had to make self-contained movies to be sure nothing screwed up.

Let’s hope the next version of FCP fixes this BIG problem.

I have looked into pilotware, and I spoke to them at NAB last year, but they looked like they were not very interested in customers from smaller countries (how many million viewers do you have.. well.. Norway is only 4 million). Do you still have to pay a rent on the software ??

Yeah.. the too much too soon plugin is perfect for that. We have been using it on the norwegian version of bachelor and it looks beautiful.

May 16, 2008 at 8:13 am in reply to: FCP Dramatic Slow Down

We bought a couple of ajas to fix the problems with the slowdowns. No problems in mixing decklinks and ajas. If you upgrade your mac, the problem will more or less go away (new intelmac), so it might not be very smart to use money on a aja card… depends on your setup.
