  • Could you define that in a little more detail.

I could create an effect that defines two sets of crop co-ordinates and provide a smooth curve option between them. Is that what you mean?

  • The delay control is labelled as Start % and End %

The animation in this case will start 45% in, and conclude 85% from the start.

July 30, 2011 at 6:11 pm in reply to: Beware the zero length gap!

It may be zero frames long, but it probably has a length in subframes. As audio can be trimmed in units of 1/80th of a frame, you can end up with tiny gaps.

To measure these more accurately, in Editing Preferences, choose ‘HH:MM:SS:FF + Subframes’ from the Time Display pop-up. The Timeline Index and the main timecode display will now show measurements in subframes.

When you say the effects are broken, what do you mean?

I heard that an old Motion 4 file was causing some Motion effects to display as blue. That problem was solved by deleting

    Your Startup HD/Users/Your user name/Library/Application Support/Motion/Presets/Projects

Hope this is the problem and solution!

    Thanks.

    1. Your solution is the one I’ve used for more recent effects.

    2. I’m not getting that problem on my system. Is the icon preview in the effects browser correct? Before publishing any effects I delete the ‘large.png’ that Motion automatically generates – the ‘small.png’ seems to be enough. In the case of ‘4 Up’ I didn’t do anything special for it to preview in FCP. Does its preview work on your system?

You need to use a Project Loop End Marker. That will allow drop zone video to play at their source rate. Have a look at page 529 of the manual.

My 4 Up effect uses three drop zone videos. Download it from my blog post and take a look at the Project Loop section (the section of the timeline shaded in gold).

July 26, 2011 at 1:08 pm in reply to: FCP 7 and X play well together on the same disk?

On the plug-in developer list, someone on the FCP X team said the reason behind the ‘different partition’ instruction was to make sure no FCP 7 workflows were screwed up by FCS3 apps being moved and renamed by the FCP X installer.

  • I read it in the online help system. It is the section marked “Adjust the connection point of a connected clip” – it’s on the top of page 82 of the PDF I generated from the help viewer.

It’s in Edit your project > Add and remove clips > Connect clips

I find this sort of thing by reading the manual away from the software – although it’s hard, I try and read every word. It’s tempting to skip sections that I think I already know. Reading away from the app means I don’t get distracted by trying out a specific feature.

While reading I don’t expect to remember how to do everything, just to remember what is possible.

Fun fact: DVD and Blu-Ray templates in FCP 7 and X are Quartz Compositions.

I might soon blog about adding templates.

If I can get it to work!

July 22, 2011 at 3:33 pm in reply to: Separate video and audio dissolves workflow?

Sadly you can’t use Motion to create a video only cross-dissolve. The audio crossfade is applied by FCP.

All one could do is create a video cross dissolve that has more controls: centre, start and stop time, but the video transition could never be longer than the audio transition with this method.
