  • Timing problem with Motion Template for FCP X

Posted by Jens Jacobsen on July 28, 2011 at 5:59 pm

    Hi,
I created a template in Motion 5 which has a Drop Zone and the Effect Source (main video). It works nicely in FCP X—I thought. But now I realize that the timing is broken. The clip in the Drop Zone is played back in a different speed that the main video in the Effect Source. This renders the effect useless.

I checked the frame rates of the template, the FCP project and both clips (all were 30 fps). I tried several times, cleared the prefs, restarted, etc. And it is also on an exported video, not only in FCP.
You can see this behavior even when you assign the very same clip to the Drop Zone which is in the Effect Source.

Any hint would be appreciated, I am desperate.
    Thanks,
    Jens

You need to use a Project Loop End Marker. That will allow drop zone video to play at their source rate. Have a look at page 529 of the manual.

My 4 Up effect uses three drop zone videos. Download it from my blog post and take a look at the Project Loop section (the section of the timeline shaded in gold).

    Alex, you are my hero!
Yesterday I was close to desperation and planed to throw away two entire day’s work and use Motion 4 for my project. Today I am singing at my desk! Thanks a lot!!!

Since you are a rigging pro, I got two more questions on this (both problems occur with your template as well on my system):

    1) When the clip is longer than the Motion template, it is not played back entirely, but it loops after the length of the object in Motion. It is no problem, though, I just made the object in Motion 30 mins long…

    2) If I click on the Effect in FCPX, I see only a blue preview. When I open any of my custom templates in Motion, the previews work again. (Assigning the effect doesn’t work also. But I clips that already have the effect assigned work, though.)

But these are minor nuisances. Thanks again for your great help!

    Thanks.

    1. Your solution is the one I’ve used for more recent effects.

    2. I’m not getting that problem on my system. Is the icon preview in the effects browser correct? Before publishing any effects I delete the ‘large.png’ that Motion automatically generates – the ‘small.png’ seems to be enough. In the case of ‘4 Up’ I didn’t do anything special for it to preview in FCP. Does its preview work on your system?

It is very strange: I get the same behavior with your clip as well as with mine. To make things worse, I discovered that the effects are broken when I re-open FCP X. I am not yet sure, but I afraid, I have to reassign them and have to make all the tweaks to keyframes etc. Arg.

But: I did just install your effect on my system at home. It is basically the same iMac, just with a slower processor. And here, your effect works like a charm.

Do you have any idea what could have messed up my system at work? The folder structure for the effects is the same, only the projects and events are on an external HD there.

    Cheers, Jens

When you say the effects are broken, what do you mean?

I heard that an old Motion 4 file was causing some Motion effects to display as blue. That problem was solved by deleting

    Your Startup HD/Users/Your user name/Library/Application Support/Motion/Presets/Projects

Hope this is the problem and solution!

    Alex, you did it again!
Yes, “broken” meant, I get the blue preview. I just got rid of all the prefs (Motion 4 prefs are in “Startup HD/Users/Your user name/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro Studio/Motion/Presets/”), and now everything is fine.

    Thank you so much, again!

    Alex,

It looks like you seem to know a lot about Motion 5! I have a question for you, if you don’t mind.

I have a project with drop zones. When I insert my video into these drop zones, it plays fine, but the start is delayed. So when the camera zooms over to that particular drop zone, there is about a 15 frame delay before the content within the drop zone begins to play.

I’ve searched everywhere and can’t seem to find any timing controls for this. Do you have any ideas or suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Greg

Greg- are you still having that problem with the 15 second delay? Which template was that?
