Vince, you remember by any chance which HP laptops were these and which NVidia chipsets were inside?
(On a side note, you would think failure and return rate stats on major brand laptops would be publicly accessible… it’s not, is it?)

Is there a reason you’re not going for the Quadro 2000m on W520? (I thought it was an option.)
I haven’t heard of anyone trying hardware accelerated MPE on the 1000m. Its 96 Cuda cores are on the low end, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work.

I am with Ron on this – I like HPs (and so does Adobe :)) – even though currently Lenovo W520 seems to be the best value among laptops with officially supported GPUs. Here is a partial list:

This begs the question, why Premiere Pro then? Why not Premiere Elements, etc.? Sure you can install it on nearly anything – you can also try running 3DS Max or a VM cluster on a laptop. Will it work? To a degree.
Other than that – sure:
HP ProBook 4535s (LJ502UT). USB 3.0, ExpressCard/34 lot, quad-core AMD CPU, 4GB RAM, 750GB 7200rpm HDD, Win7 Pro 64 – all for $699.

My bad – Active D-Lighting has no effect in video recording on D300S.
At the same time, properly set d300s has one of the best dynamic ranges in its class – so this is a question of camera settings and lighting, to solve your problem.
(I thinks the videos are very good.)

Ditto Paul Jay’s advice – see also Nikon’s Active D-Lighting (if it has effect in video modes – not sure about that).
If it doesn’t (or not much help) – is there an option for fill lights, or shooting in natural lighting with less contrast?

Web content can be all the way to 4K these days.
My 1st thought after reading your question was, will the editing be simple, short and easy enough for a cheap laptop to not cause insufferable pain to the owner. Can’t say until I know more but the likelihood is high, that it will. Premiere Pro is a piece of software that generally needs a fast computer, and $600 just isn’t the right budget for it.

It’s more of a computer speed issue with decoding and scaling of R3D files, than the amount of RAM. That said, ensure your memory settings are optimized.
On a side note, you will see the benefit of more RAM on longer and more complex timelines (sequences), dynamic linking, etc.

Thanks Abraham. I didn’t mean URLs (I know those are automatically hyperlinked) – I meant custom hyperlinks where arbitrary text is hyperlinked with an arbitrary URL.
