I’ve never tried it, will be curious to see how it works for you.
Theoretically exFAT should be faster than either NTFS or HFS+ because of lower overhead – but in practice, the difference should be negligible and really, really depends on (1) the implementation (how well it’s programmed) and (2) usage scenario. I.e. if you plan to use exFAT on fast SSDs and need really fast access to it (over 200MB/s), there could be significant difference based on implementation and OS overhead. For transfer speeds under 100MB/s, the difference is likely negligible.
(On a side note, I don’t see how exFAT addresses fragmentation issues inherent in FAT32.)

I was wondering about it too, and actually was off in my estimate of 1/8th of the bandwidth: looks like it’s 1:6.4.
PCIe Gen2 is 500MB/s one-way (1GB/s full duplex) per lane. 16 lanes – 8GBs or 64Gbs one way – vs. 10Gbs on TB.

I’d say unlikely: Thunderbolt’s data bandwidth is only 1/8th of a standard Gen 16x PCIe slot; probably inadequate for Premiere Pro purposes.

BMD is rather ambiguous in their reference to X58:
“Intel X58 based motherboards are current not recommended.”
…as it may refer to Intel X58 chipset in general, or to Intel-manufactured motherboards only, that are based on X58. In the latter case, there are plenty of non-Intel motherboards based on the X58 chipset, including that in the Z400.
Bottom line, they do endorse the Z400; you could also interpret their ambivalence about X58 as “any X58 motherboard we don’t endorse, is not supported – although it doesn’t mean it won’t work.”
P.S. Hmmm, “are current not recommended”? Same people wrote it that uttered “all your base belog to us”?

(You meant that Drobo could not be used as a shared storage system for collaborative editing, right, Bob? Although even that qualifier doesn’t cover all the angles as some Drobos actually can be used for that purpose, as evidenced by our OP.)

SAN or NAS? Most Drobos are NASs. SANs are faster, but are much more complex undertaking and more expensive generally.
Which Drobo is it, how many editing seats, what are the file formats you work with (and their bitrates if applicable), and how many video layers do your editors work with at the same time? Once you figure out the approximate peak (or desired) load (bandwidth), you could start shopping for a Drobo replacement… which could be a 12- or 8-bay Drobo iSCSI (will require another server) 12-bay 3x GigE Drobo, possibly.

5870: peak power 188W; GTX 470 – 215W. Apple allows a max of 300W for all PCIe cards, i.e. these two cards will overdraw the PSU under load. Looks like you’d need to replace the 5870 with a GT120 to be on a safe side.

A word of caution on Caviars: unlike Deskstars, using Black Caviars in RAID other than 0 and 1 may void their warranty: WD is pretty specific that RAID5 is not their intended use.

If they do, it will be a separate product. Like Mark said, the beauty of the Shuttle is in its simplicity. Adding an encoder will add quite a bit to the cost, and make it a different product.
