Television programming is one area that I am trying to develop myself. I have a couple ideas that I am trying to get worked out before I try to create a pilot and try to pitch.

[walter biscardi] “The good news I have all my ducks in a row”

To protect yourself and your intellectual property, what are some of the things you had done to make sure you had protected yourself? I know it’s never fun to loose a friend over such infringement, but protecting your own lively hood and family is much more important.

I have also expanded our services to include various “hobbies” that I have been doing for years. This has added streams of revenue, but we are constantly search for new and fresh approaches.

Keep us posted on the good, bad and ugly with the new mini. This could prove to be a good cost effective way to go for log/capture, intern/apprentice editing type systems.

[Tom Wolsky] “Depends on deck, camera, board, format, etc.”

Most of our work is captured from HDV and XDCam HD format via Kona3 cards. We capture to ProRes with Embedded audio.

So capturing to G-Raids over firewire 800 would be better than local hard drive?

January 6, 2009 at 1:18 pm in reply to: How to do two ‘Matrix’ style edits…

The effect at 1:52 is simply mulit layering the clip and creating mask to reveal the surfer on layers below. Each clip is offset in time by a few frames to see the event occur simultaneously. Multiple layers and mask. No rotoscoping needed.

The effect of “bullet time” (3:52??). That effect could be done with one camera. Setup looking down beach right, have surfer do jump. Walk along beach recording the sky line and background using a steadycam or something similar for a stable shot. Setup at second location down the beach and have surfer redo the jump. In post play clip one from angle one, when the surfer is in the air during jump, make still frame. Insert footage of walking along beach in fast motion, adding some effects to hide the crudeness of the effect. Add the second camera angle so that the surfer aligns with the previous angle. The art of this effect is making sure the surfer is in a similar position at your cuts and letting your photoshop work fill in the gap. Take the screen grab from angle on and a screen grab from angle two. Cut out the surfer in both and begin manipulating the surfer to simulate the motion. You could also do the effect more successfully using After Effects.

January 6, 2009 at 1:02 pm in reply to: Questions about reconnecting project files in FCP 6

    Question 1:
[Kara Andrade] “When I went to reconnect, then did “search” it would
search for files with the clip name. But the clip name was different
than the original media, so it failed to find the media and did not
    reconnect.”

Once you change the clip name within FCP, you loose the connection to the original file name. NEVER change clip names once you have them in your project. To reconnect you will have to manually locate each and every clip and hope you can do so with names changed.

    Question 2:
[Kara Andrade] “Is it important for our clip names to
always match our original media names to ensure proper connection?”

If you are logging your media in a logical fashion with a proper naming convention, you should not need to rename media. Develop a system of naming your clips when you digitize so that the file name is helpful and meaningful whether you are on the East or West coast. Shane Ross has a great DVD to help with this very issue, check it out.

    Question 3:

    [Kara Andrade] “do we
have to have the identical file structure on our 2 drives?”

You do not have to have the same file structure. You can reconnect media manually if FCP will not find the files for you. The important thing is to not change the file name. Reconnecting media can be a monster once file names start getting changed within projects.

    Question 4:

[Kara Andrade] “Is it possible you are using the same original media but
they have given the clips different names in the 2 projects?”

Yes. But again, why? You can change the name of a file within your project and not alter the original file name. However, when you have to go back and reconnect media you will be lost as to which file should connect.

    Question 5:

[Kara Andrade] “Is it possible to copy all sequence settings and other
project settings/preferences from one project file to the next, other
than manually reproducing them in the new project file?””

Create a custom Easy Setup that meets your project specs and copy that Setup to all of your workstations. That way all machines have the same setup characteristics for each project created.

Bottom line is create a naming convention that will adequately work for your editing and workflow environment. Make sure that everyone sticks to those guidelines and NEVER change file names. As long as everyone is using the same “rules” you should not have problems reconnecting media as you move it from drive to drive.

December 17, 2008 at 4:42 pm in reply to: Colour grading – shake? fcp? How?

Use Color. It is an impressive application that comes standard with your Final Cut Studio. Walter Biscardi has an excellent tutorial series to show you how to get started.

    Use Color.

December 3, 2008 at 5:22 pm in reply to: HDV timecode breaks on every scene

We have experienced the same problem. We would get timecode breaks on HDV frequently, especially with our Canon camera’s. Our solution has been to do a slam record to a new tape which will generate new timecode for the tape. Then you will not have breaks in code.

December 2, 2008 at 3:40 pm in reply to: 3 Projectors from one machine

You can run multiple projectors from one computer using a splitter. You will need to acquire additional equipment to make this work. I have done this at various events using a VGA splitter and a signal booster.

It may be Motion or After Effects, no way to tell. However, you could create that effect/look using Motion.
