After much reading and discussing, we are going to alter the way we manage our media (Yeah!!..). We are implementing the recommended “digitize local and move global” method. We have ten workstations digitizing and editing three TV shows and Five DVD titles. So workflow that manages our media more efficiently was needed. We are utilizing ideas and suggestions from several sources, such as Ross’s Getting Organized DVD.

The question that has not been answered to my satisfaction is what is meant by Local in the “digitize local and move global” workflow. Every policy that I have written has always instructed users not to use the HD with the OS and FCP installed as a digitize drive. There are too many potential issues that may arise when doing so. However, with this Local to Global method, does Local alter my previous policy?

In the Local to Global workflow, is the Capture Scratch set to the workstations local machine or should it be set to the external or partitioned drive? Every workstation has a 750 GB G-Raid connected via firewire 800. Should they be the “Local” drive of choice or does it matter since the media is getting moved to the XSAN as soon as it is digitized?

    Thanks for the input.

Capture to the G-Raid for most devices. Depends on deck, camera, board, format, etc.

    All the best,

[Tom Wolsky] “Depends on deck, camera, board, format, etc.”

Most of our work is captured from HDV and XDCam HD format via Kona3 cards. We capture to ProRes with Embedded audio.

So capturing to G-Raids over firewire 800 would be better than local hard drive?

What I and the others mean by “capture locally,” is capture to local storage attached to the edit bay, not to the server. So the same rule applies…do not capture to the system drive, but rather to secondary storage attached to the computer. MacPros have those great internal bays just itching to be used…and are far better than FW800.

We’ve loaded up our mac Pro’s with 2 -3 extra terrabyte drives internally, and that’s where the “local” goes. Even our older G5’s have a secondary terrabyte drive, and that’s what we use for “local”.

    Never use the system drive.

Good luck with this workflow… I think you’ll like it.

Don’t forget to comb through the media BEFORE you move it and delete the “AV” files, the Bars and Tone, the “mistake” clips. That’s the benefit of this workflow.
