I’m in the middle of editing a short fairytale for my degree. I’m using Final Cut Pro, but wanted to do some colour grading to make it look for fairytale-ish! Perhaps the look of 2005 The Brothers Grimm film.

    https://www.apple.com/trailers/miramax/the_brothers_grimm/
I want it to look just like this!! Check out the trailer on the apple website – the colours!

I want it looking quite vibrant and surreal. Any advice on how I go about doing this… which program etc? A friend has told me to do it using Shake.. export the edited film as an Image Sequence and open it up in shake.

Is this the best thing to do and once I’ve done this, how do I go about getting the right colours and grading etc?

    What would you suggest?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Want it to look that good? Hire a colorist. That film was colored by a professional that does only that…color grade films. And no, they don’t use SHAKE for that. SHAKE is a compositing application…visual effects. They used DaVinci most likely.

But you do have a tool open to you called COLOR, if you have Final Cut Studio 2. And if you really feel like you want to tackle this yourself, you can get this DVD by our own Walter Biscardi:

However, if you want it to look really good…like that film…you should hire a professional. That look takes skill and years of knowledge. But you can at least make it look better.

Use Color. It is an impressive application that comes standard with your Final Cut Studio. Walter Biscardi has an excellent tutorial series to show you how to get started.

    Use Color.

Hi. Well no I don’t want it to look THAT good!! I meant those kinds of colours and tones etc.. the general feel of it. But thank you, I will use color.

Use Color, it’s included with Studio 2 and can achieve daVinci style results.

Color IS amazing, but, as mentioned above, is not the easiest program to master.

I personally love Magic Bullet Looks [Google it] – and I believe it can give you some really cool looks with a very easy-to-use interface.
