We’ve typically done SE to 3.0 upgrade specials at least once a year, but we don’t pre-announce them. Not sure if we’ll be doing this now (post-acquisition), or when. About all I can say for sure is we haven’t decided NOT to do this anymore, if that helps.

Are you saying that you’ve been running pI3 for a while now and never saw a notice of an update for pIR, but all of a sudden you did? Or is this a new install (or reinstall)?

We haven’t released any updates for pIR recently.

I’ve just checked and no pIR updates are showing on my machine.

I think that MS security essentials is flagging a problem with the pIR update, but I don’t think there is one.

April 26, 2010 at 7:17 pm in reply to: Rendering as PNG (Distortion)

It’s either that the pixel aspect ratio is stored in the PNG file incorrectly, or that your viewing software is making some assumption that is not correct.

One solution is to save as TGA, which doesn’t store pixel aspect ratio.

April 26, 2010 at 2:17 pm in reply to: output always 720*480 ingnore settings ?

What output format are you choosing? If you’re choosing an image sequence (PNG for instance) than it should work fine. If you’re creating an AVI or WMV, some codecs will only output at specific resolutions — for example, the DV codec may only work with 720 x 480.

So try changing your codec. I suggest Lagarith or HuffYUV, or DivX.

April 21, 2010 at 2:31 pm in reply to: Particle Illusion After Effects CRASH upon render

Does the error box have text in the title bar? Is there anything in the error box at all?

Does this happen with any emitter you load, or only certain ones?

Do you have any other effects applied, or is pIAE the only one?

Is it applied to footage, a solid, or adjustment layer?

Try a simple comp with a solid and only pIAE applied and see if the same thing happens. If it does, then close AE and check if your graphics card has updated video drivers — go to your card manufacturer’s website, which may be ATI, NVIDIA, or others.

April 21, 2010 at 12:54 pm in reply to: PNG Animated Cursor Overexposure

    This isn’t a particleIllusion issue.

Is CursorFX converting it to 256 colors or something? Does the rendered output of particleIllusion look OK? If so, then maybe convert the pI output into 256-color using a different application first.

April 21, 2010 at 12:52 pm in reply to: Can’t delete library – can’t see it.

When the library you want to delete is loaded in particleIllusion, r-click and choose “load library”. The folder where the library file is located should open. Note the location, then close particleIllusion and delete that file.

Loading an emitter library has no effect on other libraries, so I suspect that the other libraries already had the issue but you only noticed it now.

I suggest switching to software rendering and see if those emitters start acting the way you remember. If so, update your video drivers (from your video card manufacturer’s website).

Thanks, and thanks to those who contributed. They give me ideas and more importantly new particle images to work with.

  • Does your background clip have transparency already? If not, then don’t use the particleIllusion transparency settings (the “T” icon). For a partially-transparent background you’ll need to do that in a your video editing application, not particleIllusion.

Render the particles alone (no background) choosing a format that can have alpha — so PNG, TGA, or AVI if you choose a codec that supports alpha like Lagarith or HuffYUV. Then the “Save alpha” option will be enabled.

Then composite (layer) the particle footage with your original background footage in your video editor, doing whatever you want to the layers.
