Don’t use AVI unless you use a lossless codec like HuffYUV or Lagarith, both of which are available for free download from various websites.
The “Save Alpha” option is only available when you’re saving a format that supports it: PNG, TGA, or AVI when using specific codecs (HuffYUV, Lagarith, or uncompressed — although I don’t recommend uncompressed).

Are you running Vista or Windows 7? Then it’s probably not putting the files where you think it is — writing to the Program Files folder (and subfolders) puts things in another folder.
Does anybody know if there is a way to work around this in Vista or Windows 7?

I’ve said it before, but those emitters don’t really rely on particleIllusion. They’re special because they use complex animated image sequences for the particles. So what you’re really asking for is a bunch of new animated images, which we just don’t have the experience or time to create.
The reason there were horses, birds, and other animals in that library was that a particleIllusion user donated his time and effort to create them for the pI community.
It’s a simple matter to swap out an existing particle image for another one in an emitter, so if you can find other animated sequences of a bird flapping, you can take the existing bird flock emitter and change it to use the new image.
As much as I’d love to create a bunch of image sequences for this sort of thing, it’s just not my area of expertise. Also, the majority of particleIllusion users are not looking for more flocks of birds or herds of animals emitters.

Can you add the same exact image file as a background image?
If not, try a different PNG file, or maybe just a JPG. I want to see if you can load *any* images. Loading as a bg image might be easier at this stage. Once you get a file that loads as bg, then try using it as a shape.

Just to be clear, the “Preferences” values will be used for every New project.
You can change it in the current project using the playback toolbar as suggested or in the Project Settings dialog.

It appears to be working normally. Press the spacebar in AE and you should see the particles created.

It’s a full license that expires after 6 months. There are no limitations other than that.
(It is not bundled with Vegas 10. It’s one of the upgrade perk options.)

I think there’s a basic usage issue here. With “save alpha” checked, an alpha channel is created only for the particles. The thinking was you’d want to layer the particles over something else in another application.
If you just want the particles composited on the background image, then don’t save alpha.
If you want the particles with alpha, then turn off the bg image (click the “bg” icon to toggle”), render with “save alpha” checked, and composite on your image in another app.

When you check “save alpha”, make sure “remove black background…” is NOT checked.
