Because After Effects holds it’s RAM Preivew in RGBA 4:4:4:4, and the IO Express is natively a single link YUV 4:2:2 device, it is not unexpected that the RAM Preview Output is not realtime.

That being said, the problem you’re having with the AJA device selected as the output device is not normal and you should call and talk to one of our tech support representatives who can help you sort that out.

If you are using an AJA KONA 3 card it provides a 2K Crop feature in the AJA Control Panel application that allows you to crop a 4:3 2K film raster to 1920×1080.

The “Invalid Selection” warning prompt would seem to indicate that you have a setting configured incorrectly for the conversion operation. An easy solution might be to enter the CONFIG menu and navigate to menu parameter 99.0 Factory Reset and perform a factory reset; this should clear out any mis-set parameters. Then re-enter the CONFIG parameter 1.4 In Convert and set it according to your desired format (in your case, HD 1080).

The latest version of the AJA Mac Plugins for Adobe is v. 8.5. That version of Plugins will work with the v. 8.1.1 KONA drivers and with the CS5 Adobe Applications.

For use with Adobe CS4 applications, you can use the v. 7.1 AJA Mac Plugins for Adobe with the v. 7.1 KONA Drivers.

Since the name of the clip created was “TEST”, this indicates that the Use Custom Clip Name parameter in the MEDIA menu was enabled. The fact that only one recording with this name was produced insinuates that the Use Custom Clip Take parameter in the MEDIA menu was taken out of it’s default state of “ON” and instead set to “OFF.”

Note that the manual includes this caution section regarding the disabling of the Custom Clip Take:

If a custom clip name is not changed and the “Use Custom Clip Take” parameter is not enabled, an existing clip can be overwritten on the disk. Example: the first recording made is called “Flying” and the “Use Custom Clip Take” parameter is not enabled and the user does not enter a new value for the custom clip name and leaves “Flying” entered, the first recording will be overwritten by the second recording. AJA does not typically recommend disabling the use of the custom clip take, but in some situations, overwriting an existing file may be desirable.

In no other circumstance can a recording created by Ki Pro be overwritten or incrementing takes not be produced.

The AJA Sales Department has been informed that there may be some specific settings that need to be adjusted if you are using FireWire devices (like the Ki Pro Storage Module) when operating under Windows 7.

1. Open “My Computer” or “Computer” from your (Start) Menu.
2. Right-click the external hard disk drive from the list and select “properties”
7. Click the “Hardware” tab.
8. Highlight the Ki Pro Storage Module from the drive list and click on “Properties”.
9. Click on the “Policies” tab.
10. You will see two radio buttons – “Optimize for quick removal” and “optimize for performance”.
11. If not selected, select “Optimize for performance” and click on “OK”. If running Vista or Windows 7 also check “enable write caching on the disk”.
12. Click on “OK” and exit.

It sounds like you may not have QuickTime 7 installed on your machine since you did a standard Snow Leopard installation. You can check for it in the Applications>Utilities sub-folder. If it is not present, you can install it from your Mac Pro Mac OS X Install DVD that shipped with the computer.

Note that even with QuickTime 7 installed, you will need to enable legacy encoders (like TIFF and TGA). Snow Leopard does not provide a UI for the enabling of legacy encoders as it previously did in Leopard. You will need to use Terminal to enable the legacy items (like TGA) so that you can see them as encoding options in VTR Xchange.

Applications>Utilities>Terminal, then type or copy/paste:
qtdefaults write LegacyCodecsEnabled yes

Since Ki Pro was intended as an acquisition product that would be used with cameras as the video source, it was designed to alert the user to a loss of video and stop recording. However, we recognize that Ki Pro is now also being used in many other applications where a VTR might have normally been used, like ISO recordings, video assist, etc. where a loss of video might occur.

Based on user feedback, AJA is investigating adding a feature so users could continue recording even after a loss of video.

From pg. 57 of the Io HD 8.0 manual, “Timelapse Tab Screen”:
To use the timelapse capability, choose the “Enable Timelapse Capture” checkbox. This functionality is enabled for all QuickTime capture applications (Final Cut Pro, VTR Xchange, etc.) Set the “Capture” and “For Interval” parameters as desired. Launch a capture application like Final Cut Pro, select the desired Easy Setup for the video format desired. You will not need to change anything within the application; the timelapse feature will produce QuickTime files with the framerate specified by the Easy Setup used. The resulting timelapse clip can be used without additional rendering.

On page 58, a screengrab showing the timelapse enabled is also featured.

You may want to convert your Animation files to match your sequence settings – likely Apple ProRes 422 or Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) – and see if this resolves the issue. You may also have non-standard frame size or frame rate related issues with your Animation files that could also cause issues.
