One of five Ki Pros being used to record line and ISOs somehow had its Clip name set to “TEST,” and apparently did not add an increment character to the clip name following each of nine or so Rec/Stop cycles. Result being that following the shoot, this deck’s drive (cam1 iso) showed only a single clip (named “TEST), the very last take recorded, visible for transfer into FCP. Is it possible that the earlier takes might still be available, with use of a file recovery utility, or are they wiped out? The production facility, for reasons unknown, did not have any form of file or data recovery software on hand to attempt a rescue when the problem was flagged by the editor.

Might be best to call AJA on that one as they will know how the files get written to the drive the best.

Theoretically, it could be possible that the Ki is writing to different parts of the platter when in this mode. You have have to get some sort of low level recovery to see if the data is still there to restore the resource Forks.

    It won’t be perfect.

Since the name of the clip created was “TEST”, this indicates that the Use Custom Clip Name parameter in the MEDIA menu was enabled. The fact that only one recording with this name was produced insinuates that the Use Custom Clip Take parameter in the MEDIA menu was taken out of it’s default state of “ON” and instead set to “OFF.”

You can refer to pg. 41 of the Ki Pro v2.0 manual for details on operation:
    https://www.aja.com/pdf/support/AJA_KiPro_manual_v2.0.pdf

Note that the manual includes this caution section regarding the disabling of the Custom Clip Take:

    —–
    Caution!
If a custom clip name is not changed and the “Use Custom Clip Take” parameter is not enabled, an existing clip can be overwritten on the disk. Example: the first recording made is called “Flying” and the “Use Custom Clip Take” parameter is not enabled and the user does not enter a new value for the custom clip name and leaves “Flying” entered, the first recording will be overwritten by the second recording. AJA does not typically recommend disabling the use of the custom clip take, but in some situations, overwriting an existing file may be desirable.
    —–

In no other circumstance can a recording created by Ki Pro be overwritten or incrementing takes not be produced.

If you have further questions, you can refer to the user manual as noted or contact AJA technical support. Please note that AJA technical support is not available Monday, January 17th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day but will be available again on Tuesday, January 18th.
