The AJA KONA 3 can perform SD to SD aspect ratio conversions. The following options are offered:
Letterbox: this transforms SD anamorphic material to a letterboxed image.
H Crop: will produce a horizontally stretched effect on the image; transforms anamorphic SD to full frame SD.
Pillarbox: will produce an image in the center of the screen with black borders on the left and right sides and an anamorphized image in the center.
V Crop: will transform SD letterbox material to an anamorphic image.

We received this information from our product management team; it was also posted to another forum where you posed this question:
“The Ki Pro products auto-detect the incoming video format and frame rate. The Sony PMW-F3 can output signal as 1080PsF 23.98 or as 1080i 29.97 depending on menu settings; perhaps this was altered, unknowingly, at some point. This would explain why the Ki Pro Mini auto-detected 1080i 29.97 at some point and why your SxS camera recordings would still be 1080p 23.98. Hard to speculate, but this seems plausible. The key thing to know is that the Ki Pro Mini auto-detects signal so it’s doubtful that you made and incorrect setting on the Ki Pro Mini; it’s more likely that the camera output was altered.”

AJA breakout boxes are supplied with interconnect cables; if you need a spare cable for some reason, your AJA reseller can order one for you. If you have a damaged KL Box cable, you can contact AJA directly for an RMA replacement cable.

AJA offers two versions of it’s drivers; one is labeled as “NDD” and this version does not feature an extended Macintosh Desktop Display option. The other version, which lacks the “NDD” identifier, allows the user to create an extended Macintosh Desktop on the video outputs.
Shane Ross is likely using the NDD version and therefore the option is greyed out for him.

While Avid names the format in the Media Composer UI as “1080p/23.976”, that applies only to the media on the disk; media on the disk is, by nature, strictly progressive. However, “over-the-wire”, the video output uses progressive segmented frames (akin to interlaced video, but both fields represent the same temporal instance; you will note that some Sony CRTs even report “1080/48i”). The output from the Avid for 1080p/23.976 “over-the-wire” is 1080PsF/23.976 (aka 1080PsF 23.98). As stated previously, HDMI does not offer support for PsF, only true progressive or interlaced 1080 signals.
Since the Avid Media Composer configures the video output of the AJA hardware, resulting in 1080PsF output, the HDMI output on the KONA LHi is not supported; as noted before, SDI and component analog video from the KONA LHi do support PsF. One simple way to see the operation is to launch the Avid Media Composer software, use the 1080p/23.976 setting and observe how the AJA Control Panel reports “AJA Device in use by Avid” and that the format, set by the Avid software, is “1080sf23.98” in the AJA Control Panel.
If the Avid software offered an option to configure the video output to 1080p/23.976 – true progressive “over-the-wire” – then the KONA LHi card would display “1080p23.98” and the HDMI output could be used, however such a control is not offered at this time in the Avid software or the AJA Control Panel application. Some other NLE applications do allow the user to select between 1080p true progressive or 1080PsF progressive segmented frame output. In those applications, the HDMI output on the KONA LHi could be used if the application was set to a 1080p 23.98 output.

(Note: there is an exception for PsF material since HDMI does not normally support PsF, but rather 1080p – true progressive – or 1080i interlaced.)
For example, you could route signal out of the AJA KONA LHi via the SDI, the HDMI and the component analog connectors all at the same time to various monitors if you were working with 1080i, 1080p, 720p, or SD. 1080PsF would be supported on SDI and component, but not HDMI as noted. Additionally, each output can be configured independently. Let’s say you have an older SD component monitor that you want to use along with a newer HD monitor. You could configure the HDMI output for HD and configure a downconvert from HD to SD for use on your legacy analog monitor; both outputs would happen simultaneously.

The KONA LHi works with a variety of softwares including Final Cut Pro 7, Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5 and Avid Media Composer 6. Support for Final Cut Pro 7 is supplied as part of the driver installation and plug ins specific to Adobe and Avid are also available.You asked:

It seems like the KONA LHi would be the best fit for your needs because you have some analog legacy VTRs that you would like to ingest material from.
