Which AJA Card or will Io LA continue to work?

The AJA Io LA is now an end-of-life product. It was specifically designed to work with Final Cut Pro. If you are considering a new computer and card purchase, AJA offers two choices that would support ingest from Betacam SP and HD video monitoring via a variety of applications.

The first choice is the KONA LHe Plus. It provides analog and digital i/o and would allow you to ingest from Betacam SP via component analog connection. You can also use the KONA LHe Plus for HD monitoring via SDI or component analog. You can learn more about the product here:

AJA also offers the KONA LHi. Like the KONA LHe Plus, it provides analog and digital i/o, but in addition to SDI digital connectivity, it also offers HDMI i/o. It does sound like the LHi would be the best bet.

In addition to the HDMI output for monitoring, will the component outputs work simultaneously or is it either/or? I have older component monitors now but plan to add at least one HDMI monitor soon.

Will the LHi work with all Final Cut, Premier and Avid software well? Will the LHi provide the mercury engine that Premier needs to play HD footage smoothly or is that a different animal NVIDEA 4000?

Would your Kona 3G add a great deal for me if I’m mostly editing EX1 and P2 footage?

The AJA KONA LHi outputs are all active at the same time. (Note: there is an exception for PsF material since HDMI does not normally support PsF, but rather 1080p – true progressive – or 1080i interlaced.)

For example, you could route signal out of the AJA KONA LHi via the SDI, the HDMI and the component analog connectors all at the same time to various monitors if you were working with 1080i, 1080p, 720p, or SD. 1080PsF would be supported on SDI and component, but not HDMI as noted. Additionally, each output can be configured independently. Let’s say you have an older SD component monitor that you want to use along with a newer HD monitor. You could configure the HDMI output for HD and configure a downconvert from HD to SD for use on your legacy analog monitor; both outputs would happen simultaneously.

The KONA LHi works with a variety of softwares including Final Cut Pro 7, Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5 and Avid Media Composer 6. Support for Final Cut Pro 7 is supplied as part of the driver installation and plug ins specific to Adobe and Avid are also available.

Adobe Mercury Playback Engine support is provided via interaction with specific graphics cards when used in conjunction with Adobe applications. You can read more about it here:

It seems like the KONA LHi would be the best fit for your needs because you have some analog legacy VTRs that you would like to ingest material from. The KONA 3G does not offer analog input; a converter would be required to use analog input with the KONA 3G.
