pIllusion on windows doesn’t work with quicktime. Render out of AE as an image sequence – such as a tiff, PNG or TGA sequence.

-Runs outside of AESo in short, if you are interested in having a very robust library of effects (Like BG’s, fire, water, sparkels) that can be easily customized and works quickly, the pIllusion is the one to go with.
If you need to be working within AE, and you need 3D, then particular is the way to go.
For me, unless I’m doing a shot that needs 3D, and that rarely happens because you can fake a lot of 3D, then I use particleIllusion. I do have particular, and like it (and have had occasions where it was the ONLY way I could have done things), but pIllusion is my weapon of choice for fast turn around time and effects.

I haven;t seen a great version of this effect in AE. Fire is one of those things that is very difficult to simulate, with water being another one.
We see these 2 elements every day, so it;s hard to fool people.
But you;ll need a particle system, and particlular is the best one in AE, but outside AE there is also an awesome program called wondertouch particleIllusion that works well with AE, and has over 1800 effects, amy of which are fire related.
Honestly, the most realistic solution would be to find stock footage of a ring of fire to composite in your effects shot, but if you want real control over the effect, then check out pIllusion or particular.

I teach continuing Education. That means anyone can take the classes provided they have graduated from college. No credit, no degree. Just single classes that you can take. Howver they do cost money – around $800 or so for 15 2 hour classes, or 10 3 hour classes in the summer.
We hold the AENY meetings at Pratt (not a university by the way – and Art and Design School), so if you come by, you can pick up a course catalog.

Before you can do anything like that you need to learn the software. Even if it;s just the basics.
There are a lot of books out there, and training DVD’s. We also have a lot of free tutorials here at the cow that will teach you how to use After Effects.
There are a lot of classes in NY. I teach at Pratt (After Effects II) and there is an intro class there too. http://www.pratt.edu
And we even have a New York After Effects USer Group for anyone interested in AE. http://www.aeny.com

I’m a huge fan of Sorenson Squeeze. It aint the cheepest of the packages, but it really gets the job done well. And it can output in many formats.

You need to approach your projects from the standpoint of telling a story. And if not a story, then a feel.
Too often people just copy an effect, not really understanding that to really make it work, it has to say something or be a part of something that has something to say. Eyecandy gets pretty boring pretty quickly – at least for me.
As far as contructing the look, if you have no real restrictions on how it needs to look (no client, no set logo, no product) I’d start by figureing out the colors. Keep in mind that things look VERY different over a BG vs over black.
And the colors (as TonyTony said) create the mood of the entire thing. The same graphic over blue will have a completely different feel than over Red. Also, to make things more integrated you should experiment with Transfer/Blending modes so that the mo graph elements and the BG mix together instead of being seperate.
Think about ways to create a moving BG. It could be subtle or quite powerful. You never want it to overpower your graphics, but it’s very important for setting the tone.
Also, what sort of sound do you plan on having. Music also creates a tone. And it may help you in feeling out the look for the piece – plus give you good hit points for different animation as well.
This is all advice on the experimental side of things. In real-life, you have more restrictions, but since you want to try new things, take a crack at it.
Oh yeah – storyboard it out to some degree. Decide what happens when before you start animating. Have a set begining and end with regard to time. That will help a lot.
