  • What is the best way to go about learning AE?

Posted by Rameneater84 on March 9, 2007 at 3:32 am

I’ve been messing around with adobe products for a lil while now, and i’m able to do somethings but there are still lots of things in my head that i am not able to create. I live in new york city and i was wondering if there were side classes i can take to learn Adobe products, mainly AE, but I understand all the products coincide and work together.

I know the bare basics, and some effects. There are many books on these products but which book should I start with?

Also, sometimes people make effects with many layers piled on top of each other, that was made before hand in photoshop. I cannot draw for my life, how much of an art skill do I need to create something like smoke or an energy ball?

Here are the specific examples im talking about
    https://ryanw.michaelfrisk.com/ryan-w/clips/energyball2.mov
    https://ryanw.michaelfrisk.com/ryan-w/clips/lightning_duel.mov

The creator was Ryan Wieber, who made the film “Ryan vs Dorkman”. It’s considered amateur stuff, but it looks pretty professional to me. He told me he learned everything through books. I wanna be at that level.
Anyway, yea in that energyball clip, the whole thing consists of 6 pictures fading in and out, with an added glow effect. I’m able to comprehend that, but the thing I wouldnt be able to do was create each of those layers. Can anyone guide me into being able to think that way?

Sorry I know the questions are sorta jumbled. Thank you in advance.

Before you can do anything like that you need to learn the software. Even if it;s just the basics.

There are a lot of books out there, and training DVD’s. We also have a lot of free tutorials here at the cow that will teach you how to use After Effects.

There are a lot of classes in NY. I teach at Pratt (After Effects II) and there is an intro class there too. http://www.pratt.edu

And we even have a New York After Effects USer Group for anyone interested in AE. http://www.aeny.com

Great thanks alot =D, but that second link is not working. At your university are there classes that are just open to public? I’m not interested in getting a degree I just want to take courses here and there. Sort of like swimming classes given in colleges, but you dont have to pay the tuition price, its just something seperate the college offers.

If that guy really drew that energy ball 6 times in photoshop he wasted his time. There are much easier ways of doing that, but like Aharon said, start with the basics before you try anything too crazy.

You can try reading different books…click this link for motion grphics:

    https://www.cybmotion.com/

these are the books that I tried when I was starting to learn after effects. these are the so-called the Bible of motion graphics. They are easy to learn and will give you a good foundation in this field.

I teach continuing Education. That means anyone can take the classes provided they have graduated from college. No credit, no degree. Just single classes that you can take. Howver they do cost money – around $800 or so for 15 2 hour classes, or 10 3 hour classes in the summer.

We hold the AENY meetings at Pratt (not a university by the way – and Art and Design School), so if you come by, you can pick up a course catalog.
