ring of fire
Posted by R2dee Doo on March 9, 2007 at 10:32 amhello hippies
I would like to have a (3d) layer with a burning ring of fire. Ive seen some fire plugs but none of them (before I buy) answers me if that’s possible and how. Can anyone suggest anything? Is there a tut somewhere? I have googled but to no result.
Thanks

March 9, 2007 at 10:56 amI guess it’s one of those “How real do you want it?” questions. A good place to start would be downloading the demo version of Trapcode’s Particular along with the PyroPack and try some of the presets. You can create a ring by defining the shape in a pre-comp and then using it as a layer/ layer grid emitter. Also the Flame effect in Tinderbox 4 is quite good, but it is really more meant for candles and torches. particleIllusion has a ton of usable fire presets, but it’s of course an external program. Lastly, look into how you can create the effect with AE’s own tools. Fractal Noise combined with the Tint effect or Colorama and bent into place using Bezier Warp can look quite okay and you don’t need to spend any extra money…

March 9, 2007 at 11:21 amThanks, honoured to get an answer from Mylenium himself! (and thanks for the tutorials as well)
I want a little 3d ring of fire for my website interface, just several seconds long, to integrate it with some animation. I will look into the methods you have suggested.

March 9, 2007 at 2:11 pmI haven;t seen a great version of this effect in AE. Fire is one of those things that is very difficult to simulate, with water being another one.
We see these 2 elements every day, so it;s hard to fool people.
But you;ll need a particle system, and particlular is the best one in AE, but outside AE there is also an awesome program called wondertouch particleIllusion that works well with AE, and has over 1800 effects, amy of which are fire related.
Honestly, the most realistic solution would be to find stock footage of a ring of fire to composite in your effects shot, but if you want real control over the effect, then check out pIllusion or particular.

these are easy and quick fire simulations: free, no particles, no third party plugs:

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

March 10, 2007 at 3:52 amMylenium mentioned the Pyro Pack for Trapcode Particular. The Pyro Pack actually contains a ring of fire project. I haven’t checked it out, so I can’t tell you how realistic it looks.

March 10, 2007 at 9:16 pmI worked on a conference where the main logo identity was a ring of fire.
I used stock footage of fire from Artbeats (the 1/6th screen size strip) , pre-comped it into a square composition, then applied the rect-to-polar coordinates filter. I enhanced it with a bit of Tinderbox Heathaze and possibly some glow.
Looked great.

March 11, 2007 at 3:35 amJust got finished checking out the above-mentioned Pyro project. It doesn’t look too bad, in my opinion. Certainly something you could tweak to suit your purposes.
