yep, when nesting first came out, there wasn’t a hit on the render. Now, in v8, it definitely increases render time. very annoying.

just been a recent thread om exactly this topic – has the word ‘broadcast’ IIRC.
Also, some companies wouldn’t admit to using vegas to do something like a feature, since a lot of politics involved.

email the project to file to a vegas user, who (despite not having the media) could export an AAF file, which they would then email back to you – open in PPro

well, then no wonder the render looks worse: sounds like you’re stretching SD to HD – there is no way to avoid a drop in quality.

animation: after effects – too much hassle in vegas, although do-able I suppose
vintage: color correction / curves adjustments etc

well, what are you putting INTO vegas? That looks like fraps footage, right?
what format is the original footage?
