  • Is Sony Vegas used in the video editing industrys?

Posted by John Frank on March 15, 2009 at 12:12 pm

    Hey,

I was curious as to what programs are being used in the current video editing industry. Last time I checked (A couple years back) It was mainly Avid Express, Final Cut Pro. I understand these come with large suites with alot of different tools for different tasks, and some come with their own setups with monitors and stuff. But I was wondering if Sony Vegas is being used at all. Does anyone know any movies that have been edited in Sony Vegas, or commercials? Are any employers accepting Sony Vegas Editors yet?

I know it’s just a small little stand alone video editor, but hell I’ve used Avid before and Sony Vegas totally blows it away in user interface, easiness of use etc., But for some reason I just don’t see Sony Vegas being used to edit a huge movie, it just doesn’t feel right although everything is so much easier to use.

just been a recent thread om exactly this topic – has the word ‘broadcast’ IIRC.

Also, some companies wouldn’t admit to using vegas to do something like a feature, since a lot of politics involved.

Also, some companies wouldn’t admit to using vegas to do something like a feature, since a lot of politics involved.

True story, names changed to protect the innocent.

Greg Morton, 28-year veteran of NBS as a Senior Editor and segment producer, had been using Vegas to cut together significant segments for “Daytime” the top-rated news show in its slot.
In an interview with me, Greg said that “He loves using Sony Vegas because of the time it saves him.” The station has a LOT of Newscutters (not even officially supported by Avid any longer).
In fact, while I was interviewing Greg, the Pope died and they had only minutes to cut together a montage different than what they had. They’d built content for the “dead pool” but it didn’t cover certain things…so we cut it in Vegas, sent it live to broadcast from the SDI port of the Vegas system. I have a photo of me at the ‘puter, Greg looking over my shoulder, and the clock showing it’s airtime. it was a big deal in the Vegas/major broadcast world at the time.

Well…his show/channel is owned by Friendly, a family network/corporation. They’re a major stockholder in Avid.

Within hours of my online story being published, a Senior VP at Avid was on the phone to a Senior VP at Friendly, who within seconds was on the phone to a Senior VP at NBS, who then sent it down the chain of command to the managing producer of Daytime.
Who then fired Greg Morton, just two years away from his retirement. Simply because he told people he liked Vegas and someone at Avid didn’t like that. The guy at Avid, BTW, also called me and demanded I change my story. “kiss my a** didn’t go far with him, but he was let go from Avid not too long after that.

“Politics” is a mild word for the cut-throat behavior some developers engage in.

Mike Francis in Centreville Maryland runs the Queen Ann county tv station using Vegas 8.c and all the editors there use it. He has one heck of a setup too (high performance shared raid storage…). Uses Sony EX3 cameras as well. Vegas is reliable and fast.

Gary Ugarek (Deadlands, Deadlands 2 “Trapped”) cut both his zombie movies on Vegas.

I’m starting my first feature this summer. Still haven’t decided to stay with Vegas or go with Media Composer, but not because Vegas is flaky. It depends on what comes with the upcoming version 9.

I’ve been hanging out at other forums (FCP, Adobe, Avid) thinking about switching… and all I can say is… what ever you think about Vegas, we have it really good compared to most others. Most of our problems are mild compared to theirs.

[Douglas Spotted Eagle] “Within hours of my online story being published…”

That explains why the article is no longer on your site 🙁
Too bad as it was a great plug for Vegas.

    has the story…
What’s tragic, is that the NLE developer was allowed to say ABC was using their systems, and ABC was allowed to issue a press release saying “Daytime” was using their systems. The press release included quotes from a senior producer and a senior engineer.
No wonder people are afraid to speak out about what they’re using.
I’m aware of at least three major television groups using Vegas, but they will not allow a story to be published due to politics.
Sad that such a level of intimidation takes place in our industry.

It’s too bad Sony couldn’t go to these groups and say “if you want to use our gear (if they are, that is), then you let us do stories on it, no matter what it is.
I know, Sony Broadcast probably doesn’t even know that SCS exists but this is where SCS needs to have a little “chat” with other departments.

On a related note, I came across an article from TV Technology called Holiday Gifts where the author, a freelance editor, had some very good things to say about Vegas and mentions two different TV stations who use Vegas a lot.

IMO, examples like this should be published in SCS newsletters and used in their print and internet ads.

There are no words, at least none that can be used in polite professional company anyway.
I’ve been shooting and editing for a living for more than twenty-five years and thought I’d heard it all. Obviously I was a very naive babe in the woods.
Worst part is, it’s not necessary because all three majors make fine quality products and they can stand on their own capabilities.
Best part is, NO one can expect to rely on strongarm tactics forever.
At some point a product achieves a level of quality that can no longer be ignored, and lately I’ve noticed that Vegas gets a little more respect when I mention it on industry jobs. Oh sure, the respect is in a muted sort of way, but the atmosphere is a lot different, none of the snickering or the jokes about toy editing equipment.
People quietly confide that they’re big fans or that they’ve heard good things about it, or that it deserves more recognition.
The main question I get the most is, “why do you prefer it when it’s not an industry standard?”

I answer by asking them if they can tell what software did the editing on any of my Telly Award winning material, or if my house and car payments were any less valid because of the equipment I used to make a living.

I do use the other two majors when that’s what the client specifically asks for. If they have their reasons I can respect that just fine. I will still enjoy using all three products because each have their own strengths.

But if it comes down to stories like this, it will have an effect on what I recommend when a client asks. All of my gear is already paid off so I could care less, and if it doesn’t get used it goes in the paper. It will also have an effect on my future purchasing decisions as well.

Douglas Spotted Eagle, I know this is a very old thread, but I love mentioning this story when people bad mouth Vegas as being “too consumery”.

Can I get more details on this? I’ve been trying to read between the lines and search for more references to it, but I can’t find anything. Thanks!

I prefer Vegas over Avid over a lot of reasons. Vegas is more intuitive and can do easily what takes huge amount of tedius work in Avid.

I think the only reason that industry uses Avid to edit big movies but not Vegas is because Avid is there first.

It’s like when you marry someone first in your life. Then you meet someone else better, but you get stuck in marriage.
