April 29, 2005 at 4:32 pm in reply to: Sony DSR-1500A Deck

Optional Digital Boards? We have the 1500A with the optional SDI I/O board and it will play back DVCPRO-25 just fine from there. (note, the deck won’t playback DVCPRO-50) The deck gets used heavily as a loaded for dailies on DVCAM and has never given us problems. The auto tension warning has saved several tapes by stopping down the deck and refusing to do anything further (you take off the cover and gently extract by hand. tapes were saved)

The only drawback is it MUST be on its own firewire bus, so you’ll have to get a cheap PCI firewire card.

The biggest thing, at least for me, to know about HDV is it’s like a DVD: the data is a MPEG stream with GOPs and all sorts of interpolated stuff. And it’s *heavily* compressed…. Now Final Cut 5 will allow you to natively EDIT this MPEG stream, even breaking up GOP… (I saw the demo at NAB, was impressed. apparently it was an engineering nightmare) and I’d imagine Blackmagic will display it for you on a HD monitor (?). But I’d imagine this would be a processor heavy operation and might eat your G4 for lunch.

personally I’m not sold at all on HDV. It seems like a really long stretch to cheat yourself into HD world. That and the “progressive” format just has a weird cadence that doesn’t sit well with my eyes. We’re supposed to be posting on a feature ourselves and they’re talking HDV…. I hope they can wait for the new Panasonic DVCPROHD camera (fall 2005) – seems like a much better budget HD solution.

Agreed. But playing it back on CD? With a boombox or something? if you don’t hit play at the right moment or have a scratch on the disc…. or the player doesn’t like CD-R….. sounds like disaster waiting to happen.

  • We are considering using the 16×9 downconvert to feed SDI to our legacy NTSC BVM monitors for final color sign off….(for the money, I don’t think a better CRT was ever made). and 23″ apple LCD for the rest of the workflow.

Thanks everyone! the drive is in a air-conditioned machine room, so I think it was an electrical problem. Everything in house is either on APC or at the least a tripp-lite surge protector.

Thanks Luke. Because our edits bays are about 30 meters from the machine room, what we’ve found works best (for SD work) is a single SDI cable to the edit room which feeds the BVM, and then taking the SDI loop off the monitor into an AJA SDI-Component brick for the 32″ Wega in the back of the room… and at this point, we don’t have an extra 3 BNC runs on the bulkhead.
