i think what Bob is trying to say is that there are no consumer grade CRT’s that offer all the flavors of HD. For example there’s not one set (that I’m aware of) that can do 1080p – The best sony offers the resolution but can only do it interlaced. I think the large majority of consumer HD is cuurently stuck along the lines of 720 resolution.

This is a known problem at our studio. Anything over 40 minutes and your interactions slow down to a crawl – even on a dual G5 with 4 gigs RAM. It’s not a drive space or speed problem – I’ve had this happen in an online situation (Each clip had it’s own seperate piece of media and all on high performance RAID).
I heard a rumor that FCP4.5 had a 4000 object limit (?) which was to blame. We’re hoping FCP 5 solves this.

i’m willing to bet FCP 5 has more bugs than the IO driver will… remember the wackiness in FCP 4.0? That was a beast.

you should be able to export the whole thing in one fat OMF. However, if the file ends up over 2GB, some mixing systems won’t import it, so you might also want to break off several OMFs as a backup (like tracks 1-4, then 4-8, etc…)

Final Cut editors tend to be much more advanced and adaptable in these situations. Most Avid editors can’t think outside the box (ha ha ha….sorry). If I were you, I’d say something like “Oh, you don’t know how to do that?” act surprised at their lack of abilities. Leave it at that.
We still have Avids in house, and have been converting our clients to Final Cut. They say “Oh, you’re using Final Cut?” To which we reply “Yeah, it’s really a much more versatile and effective system than our Avids. I’d rather edit with Final Cut any day.” We switched 4 bays over when Avid offered to upgrade our Media Composer 7.1s to Meredian for $30K a piece. 30,000 dollars a piece!!!!! See ya later suckers.
I do sometimes think Apple markets FCP more like a prosumer app than a industrial pro app. And some of the features and effects are really better for wedding videos than pro grade work.

in my experience, yes. Final Cut makes horrible transcodes of everything. Why don’t you just take your 10 bit, lay it to Digi via SDI, and then bring it back in with “Blackmagic DV” from the Digi? It will do a beautiful DV transcode. That way you don’t have to waste time dumping down to DVCAM and then coming in Firewire.

our 500gb Bigger Disk started smoking and died… it was about a year old…. too bad we didn’t have a backup. went with the Medea G-Raid which has a fan.
