Always set expectations up front.
When a client books you always let them know of ANY potential fees. Simply explain that because you are setting aside your time for them, time that could be spent making money working for other clients that you need to be compensated appropriately.

I would always refer to it as a “cancelation fee” to the client. Phrasing it like like you have could potentially confuse a client.

Return the FW400 card and buy a cable with FW800 on one and and the FW camera conection on the other end.
A MUCH better use of the express slot would be a esata card to use with esata drives.

Just like when you move to a new OS it is recommended to start clean and not “upgrade”, I recommend the same thing when moving to a new version of FCS.
Installing a new version of FCS on top of the old one can lead to problems.

I NEVER said time machine back up.
Time machine is good for individual files but does NOT so some important FCP components.
Manually backup your data files, erase the drive install the OS and FCS then put your data files back. I manually backup my files by doing a clone to insure I do not miss anything.
Any time I move to a new version of the OS or to a new version of the FCS I do this same process and always start clean.

Well with pro apps you would not want to instal the new version on top of the old anyway. And trying to have both on the same os can be problimatic.
Get another hard drive install a clean OS an then I stall the new FCS onto the new drive.

I’m sorry but that tells us nothing. Your defalts may be set different from everyone else defalts.
What format did you shoot?

On machines that use pro apps it is not recomended to install a new OS on top of your existing OS (it sounds like that is what you did). Erasing and installing clean always offers the BEST results.

NOPE partitioning will erase EVERYTHING on the drive.
