Due to an on going problems connecting my XLH1 after upgrading to Snow Leopard I decided to try reinstalling FCP. Big mistake as I can not now get FC Installer to work.

I removed the old program with FCS Remover, then, as instructed emptied my trash and re booted. I did still find a Final Cut Resources folder under Library: Application Support but have subsequently trashed that, emptied and rebooted (this time I also disconnected my Firewire drives and camera -which was off anyway).

Now, when I double click on the FC Installer icon the System Preferences Pane opens, I then get a box asking if I want to install for my user name, I click continue, then I get a dialogue box that says “Type your password to allow System Preferences to make changes” If I click on “Details” it says: “Right: system.preferences.install Application: System Preferences” That doesn’t seem right to me, but what do I know? So I enter my password, click okay and the dialogue box goes away leaving me staring at the System Preferences Pane and nothing else happens.

I have tried several OTHER applications and they all install without a hitch, only FCP does this, it does not even get to the point of asking me for a serial number. I have a different version of FCP and it does exactly the same thing.

Is there a fix? Do I need to reinstall Snow Leopard, must I go back to the old OS? FYI it’s FCP 5.1.4 and OS X 10.6.1.

On machines that use pro apps it is not recomended to install a new OS on top of your existing OS (it sounds like that is what you did). Erasing and installing clean always offers the BEST results.

Thanks…just to be clear (I’m more a creative than a techie), when I installed Snow Leopard I did the normal install per the Apple instructions but did not wipe my hard drive, if I understand you, Zane, your suggesting that I should do a Time Machine back up (I have a Firewire backup drive), and then reinstall Snow Leopard asking it to format the internal drive during installatiion. Do I then have to re-install all my other applications? I haven’t been having any problems with other apps (Photoshop and Rapidweaver are two I use a lot). And as stated, I can install any software except FCS.

Thanks again, I don’t want to leap into anything stupid like I did uninstalling FCS in the first place.

[Jeff Mueller] “Zane, your suggesting that I should do a Time Machine back up”

I NEVER said time machine back up.

Time machine is good for individual files but does NOT so some important FCP components.

Manually backup your data files, erase the drive install the OS and FCS then put your data files back. I manually backup my files by doing a clone to insure I do not miss anything.

Any time I move to a new version of the OS or to a new version of the FCS I do this same process and always start clean.
