[Barry Lee] “I’ve been online all this time on the iMac through the router”

REALLY, you should have said that in your first post.

At this point, you should really have someone come look at it in person. Trouble shooting something like that over the internet is extremely hard, especially when I have to drag info out that should have been included original post.

Again have someone come look at it in person.

What read/write speeds are you getting on your drive?

Use the AJA system test to check your drive speed.

[Carl Walker] “what is the best setting I need to select when exporting the footage out of FCE to be imported into FCP”

Wy not just open then FCE project in FCP? You should not have to export anything out of FCE. Keep in mind that once opened ans saved in FCP you cannot go back to FCE.

If you still cannot connect when plugged in directly the it is most likely not the wireless router.

It is one of 3 things a bad Ethernet cable, a problem with the cable modem, or a problem with the Internet provider.

Try it again directly connected but with a different Ethernet cable if it still does not work then call your Internet provider and tell them they were wrong as you still cannot get on the Internet when directly connected to the cable modem.

I’m not asking about the wireless router. For what I’m asking disconnect it and set it aside.

Do the computers connect to the internet when connected directly to the cable modem via a ethernet cable?

You will need to convert them first.

FCP is QuickTime based and avi files are NOT QuickTime based.

You need to convert the files to a proper FCP editing codec before bringing them into FCP.

[Rich Peart] “I read somewhere about editing it as Prores 422 “

    Absolutely correct.

[Rich Peart] “but I thought H264 was a apple standard so surely it should edit ok ? “

Wrong. h.264 is fine for some delivery (depending on the delivery) but it is NOT a proper editing codec.
