If it wont run anything beyond FCP 4.5 then honestly in don’t think you are going to enjoy editing any format of HD on the machine. Being at the low end of the specs for 4.5 means that you don’t have much power there at all, any render times at will be SLOW. And even if you by some means get it to use that HDV footage, please remember that HDV already takes a long time to render on newer on machines much newer then yours.

umm… hard drives do not have lasers.
When doing video you want to keep the media you are editing on an external drive (preferably esata for a laptop) If you do this all your system drive will have to do is run the OS and the application, and a 5400 rpm drive is plenty fast for that. Now your media drives definitely go with faster drive, and the reason I said preferably esata for a laptop is because otherwise the drive will still outperform the connection to the computer.

its NOT really Apple. It is technology in general. Think about it if Apple or anyone else was to only crate software that would still run on a 6 year old computer like yours, then we could NEVER be able to use the full potential of the newer hardware that is available. For the new iMovie to do what it is able to do it needs some power behind it.
This is why most professionals budget in new machines about every 3 years. Personally I get a computer with Apple Care and once the Apple Care ends it is time to look for a new computer.

I assume you are using bootcamp. If that is the case just use the boot camp utility to remove the windows partition. Then use it again to create a smaller partition for windows. It wont effect anything on the mac side.

Save the money for a new computer. With the age of your computer Apple may not even be able to get parts for it. Plus your even if the drive did work your computer wont even run the new iMovie, that requires a G5 or newer computer anyway.

You can use Quicktime Pro to export a image sequence and then create a smart folder to only show you the images that contain a 0 & 5 or what ever you choose.
Then as far as I know the easiest way to assemble them into a quicktime movie would be motion, it has a easy way to play back a image sequence.

You could try locking the firmware on the computer, that would prevent someone from putting the computer into target mode unless you unlock the firmware first. The problem with that is that is easily reset by changing the ram configuration and zapping the pram.
Another option is file vault. Using that encrypts the entire user folder. However if ANYTHING happens to corrupt file vault ALL your data becomes unaccessible. Also file vault will have LOTS of problems if your hard drive is to full. In my opinion file vault has to high of a risk and can cause to many problems then what it is worth.
I agree with just making a secure disk image that requires a password. Thats what I do for all my financial info.
