Ive done a few searches on both this forum and the rest of the internet, and all topics on converting video for youtube turn up opinions with little better results than the rest.

I understand I can use imovie 08’s convert to youtube settings, but I dont have imovie 08, i have fcp4.5. I dont even have compressor. (for somereason it isnt working on my computer)

there has to be a way to compress my 8 1/2 min video for youtube through fcp’s quicktime conversion.

In order to shrink my 720×480 dv/ntsc 1.77gb 8.12 min file to youtubes requirement of files 1024mb 10 min file size.

Im within the time limits, how do i compress my video to fit the size limits?

Can I adjust the aspect ratio to something smaller like
    640×480 or something smaller?
is this above ration scruntching my video?

how do i shrink the size without losing terrible video quality?

Since everything on Youtube is ultimately encoded to pixel dimensions of 320×240, why would you give them anythng other than 320×240???

As for which codec you encode to, 4.5 was limited by comparison to ver. 6 and so I’m not sure what to tell you there.

didnt youtube just undergo a change in specs? thats why you can now upload files up to 1024 mbs instead of the silly 100mb limit before, therefore if i can give them a bigger file size why would i want to compress my video to the older spec size? does anyone know if there is any truth to this upgrade or am i just seeing things when i go to upload my videos these days?

some people suggested giving them a slightly bigger aspect ratio than they ask for because they compress it down to 320×280(?) then the viewer can expand that tiny aspect ration to full screen, which we all know pixilates the image.

if my 720×480 8.21min video didnt take half a century to export on my titanium powerbook g4 i could play with the specs all day long to tweek my youqube quality, but ive got other things on my plate that need to get done in fcp4.5 in the meantime, which is why i come to the web for soultions from people with faster computers and more experiance.

[andy shnikes] “some people suggested giving them a slightly bigger aspect ratio than they ask for because they compress it down to 320×280”

Some people also jump off of bridges and others drink Yaegermeister, that doesn’t mean you need to listen to them.

By delivering anything other than a 320×240 video to Youtube you are simply wasting bandwidth. As I said, I’m not certain what codec your archaic ver. of FCP can deliver, but you clearly can’t deliver 8-mins of DV, as that is going to be approximately 1.5 times the new 1gb file size limitation, which BTW requires the Youtube Uploader and which is unfortunately only available for Windows presently.

Anything else the others have told you that I can address?

I recently uploaded a 137Mb file using those settings with no probs and I used youtubes basic uploader.

Save the money for a new computer. With the age of your computer Apple may not even be able to get parts for it. Plus your even if the drive did work your computer wont even run the new iMovie, that requires a G5 or newer computer anyway.

[andy shnikes] “why does apple push its clientel forward so hard?”

its NOT really Apple. It is technology in general. Think about it if Apple or anyone else was to only crate software that would still run on a 6 year old computer like yours, then we could NEVER be able to use the full potential of the newer hardware that is available. For the new iMovie to do what it is able to do it needs some power behind it.

This is why most professionals budget in new machines about every 3 years. Personally I get a computer with Apple Care and once the Apple Care ends it is time to look for a new computer.
