I know this is not the best forum to post this but I have a problem with a laptop and maybe someone has a solution. I have a 4 year old iBook that is used for editing audio files with FCP at my house. The computer is in perfect condition; last week I went to turn on the computer and it would not turn on. Push the button and nothing happened; let it go came back the next day and hit the button, it turns ons. Had it up for several days no problem, shut it down now it will not turn on again. Is their any way to turn on the computer other than the power button? I am wondering if the power button has a short. The iBook is 4 years old but still has value, I don’t want to just toss it without exploring options.
    Thanks in advance.

Unplug it and take the battery out, and make sure no USB or FW devices are plugged into it. Wait like 10 seconds. Plug it in but do not put the battery back in. If this doesn’t change the behavior, take it to an Apple Store and hopefully they’ll be able to at least identify the problem without charging you.

That’s what I would do at least.

Thank you, I gave it a try and it will not turn on.

Perhaps the power cable is loose or you need to replace the internal battery/reset the PMU (or whatever it’s called these days).

That sort of indicates the main battery or the PMU battery are failing.
If it happens again soon, start with the PMU battery, cheap.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

The main battery still hold a good charge. The PMU is probably the problem. I am not going to shut it down anymore.

Not on an iBook they are not, I believe that it may be built into the logic board.

To completely reset the PMU (Power Management Unit) on an iBook follow the instructions in this article, the previous instructions given here were incomplete.
