Well based on that alone, no one can say that it is not perfectly normal.
Rendering is a processor intense thing (especially on a old G4 laptop with only one processor) and anytime the processor is doing heavy work it will use more battery power.
Also you never said how long you were running the computer from the battery so as far I we know the battery went down to 37% in a perfectly normal time period?
Keep in mind that the battery technology used on the old G4 laptops is nothing like it is today, so your battery is never going to run as long as the battery in my new 17″ Unibody MBP.
Also remember that by default when running from a battery that the Mac OS purposely reduces the performance of the machine to give you better battery life. For that reason I NEVER render or do any other intense work from the battery because the computer throttles back the horse power so to say when running from the battery.

Yea that update is not the update that will take you to 5.1
What Tony said about doing updates mid project is completely true though.
Seeing as how you are on an intel mac and not using a Intel compatible version of FCP I highly recommend upgrading to the newer version that is fully Intel compatible.

Like others have said it may be because the drive is full, however if that is not the case then you may have a similar issue to one I recently had.
I was experiencing slow performance on my two drive raid that I connect to my MacBook Pro. I ran the AJA test and my data rates were similar in speed to what you are getting. I decided to wipe the drive and start clean. When it failed to partition, I ran some tests on the drives individually and as it turns out one of the drives was having an issue and would not always respond. One drive not functioning properly would easily cause the issue. Replaced the two 500GB drives that I had with a pair of 1TB drives and the speed was back.
So its possible that one or both of the drives may have a issue.

That is not a free update, it is a payed upgrade. And unfortunately FCP 5.1 is no longer sold, you will most likely need to move to Final Cut Studio 2 which has FCP 6.
You say you are on an intel iMac but running FCP 5. Im surprised that it even let you install FCP5 on there because FCP 5 does not support intel Macs. That is why FCP 5.1 was released was so that you could run FCP on a intel Mac

All batteries where out over time based on your computer being a G4, the thing is at lest 3-4 years old. That is actually a vary good life for a battery. I had a G4 that after 3-4 years the battery only lasted for 10 min tops. Its not that it was a bad battery or anything, it was jut well used and old. The only reason whey it may be common on G4s like you say is that all the G4s out there are older and more likely to have older batteries.

Those drives should be fine.
One thing with your plan of getting 4 drives though is that your computer only has 4 drive slots and you need to keep in mind that one of those drives is needs to be left out of your raid to be used for the system drive (always keep the system drive separate from media drives.
You could ether keep the same drive or you could replace it with one of your 500GB drives, or even replace it with another 1TB drive.
If you are on a really tight budget and cannot afford the type of drives that Walter mentioned then I would buy 3 of those new egg hard drives. Take the three 500 GB drives out, put in the new drives and raid them with disk utility. Then get a drive dock like this https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817816009 that lets you connect a old drive via USB or eSATA and transfer that info to the new raid.
Once you have freed up one of the 500GB drives you could even use carbon copy cloner to clone your system drive to the larger drive and then replace the system drive with the clone inside the machine and your machine is ready to go.
The drive dock also lets you attach ether your extra drives or new larger drives to the computer to back up projects. Then just label the drives and store them in anti static bags for safer storage.

Your camera shoots in the HDV format. There is already a lot of information on the cow about editing HDV and authoring blue ray disks. Try a little search if the forums and then post again if you have any more spicific questions.

Every one on here is going to have settings that vary in one way or another because we all are working on different projects with different needs.
My settings even change from project to project depending on the needs of that project.
FCP has thousands of different settings. There are settings for codec, frame rate, aspect ratio, field dominance, audio levels, audio rates, , transitions, filter settings, thumbnail size, render control settings, external video playback settings, scratch disk, auto save vault, memory settings, effect handling, window arraignments and MANY MANY MANY MORE.
Some settings depend on your hardware, some settings depend on your format of video.
There are just so many different possible settings, and those settings are so tied to the needs of each project that your request is impossible.
