August 1, 2009 at 5:14 am in reply to: FCS 3 upgrade NOT worth $299…

[george manzanilla] “i think some people have felt frustrated because of the long interval between fcp6 and 7. i myself thought that with so much time, surely there would be more improvements. however, i do think its well worth 299. “

    Well said.

[george manzanilla] “i don’t notice improved “render management” though, am i missing something, could someone clue me into what is new and improved here? “

Oh I have motion projects and templates render much faster then they did in FCP6.

  • Zevie first off this thread is over a year old, it would be best if you had started a new thread to ask your question.

There are clearly some things that you do not under stand about disk warrior.

1- Disk warrior does not do defrag anything. It is used to repair corruption on hard drives.
2- You cannot defrag or repair a disk that you are booted from. You must be booted from another hard drive or from a CD/DVD.

Before you do anything the most common reason that a hard drive would make a computer slow is if it is to full. Make sure that your drive has 10-20% free space on it.

[Ben Pirouet] “We have 30 Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5ghz machines at work which are more than capable, and if Final Cut Studio 3 works on PowerPC machines”

Do you really want to risk doing a hack install on that many computers. When things go south because you did not follow the system requirements you are going to have one BIG massive migraine on your shoulders. And of course Apple will be no help to you because you didn’t pay attention to the system requirements and ran a hack so you could install.

[Ben Pirouet] “Anyway I’m not even hacking the software itself”

Its still a hack, a hack is anything that makes software do something that it would not normally do. FCS3 by it self will not install on a PPC machine so you are hacking the install.

I gather you work at a educational facility. Do you really want the faculty and students all mad at you because the systems all stopped working because you hacked the install of some software that should not be running on those machines.

Play it safe, save yourself a MASSIVE headache and ether stick with FCS2 or get new Intel machines.

The Drobo is not built for speed it is for data redundancy. I recomend using a proper raid to edit from.

    [Jared Smith] “FAT32”

And that would be the problem.

Fat32 has a 4GB file size limit. You will need to reformat the drive to MacOS Extended (doing so will erase what is on the drive) and then copy over your files again.

[Ian Liuzzi-Fedun] “A lot of times the installer will limit you however once the app is installed you can just drag it right into an older machine and launch it with no trouble “

You absolutely CANNOT do that with pro apps like FCS. FCS installs a LOT of components into the Operating system itself. Just as an example all the codecs that come with FCP are not contained on the application it self.

If you did move the apps themselves over the programs would not run properly at all.

Now Ian, you have made it quite clear that you really really want to run the new software on your old PPC Mac. And like so many people here have told you its just not going to work.

Ether stick with FCP 6 for a while longer or get a new Mac.

Apple cannot keep supporting old hardware forever, doing so limits the improvements that they can make in the new software.

The Final Cut Pro forum is not where this question should be asked. I don’t know if the cow has a forum for the software you are trying to use.

I would check the website for the maker of the software. Perhaps they have tutorials or forums there.

    What Walter said.

Also it is a BAD idea to capture to your internal system drive, it has enough to do running the OS and applications, that is why you have issues capturing to the internal drive.

[joey williams] “I just got a new Mac Pro, and transferred my old hard drive off the old system over to the new drive on the new system”

Now I know thins is not part of your question, but you might be in for some trouble.

If you simply put a drive from your old MacPro into the new MacPro and start booting from that there will be issues. The OS from your old computer will NOT have all the proper drivers for the new computer.

When Apple comes out with new machine that machine will include hardware that has never been used on previous machines. Now in order to provide the proper hardware support for that new machine Apple will do a new build of the OS. So even though your old computer may be updated to 10.5.7 and the new computer came with 10.5.7, the new computer still will have a NEWER build of the OS, the build number is on the disks that came with the computer.

If you really want to move the boot drive from your old MacPro to the new one they you should also do an archive and install of the OS from the disks that came with the computer.

How also keep in mind that if you archive and install the OS that your FCP will loose some of the components that it installs into the OS. So you will also have to reinstall FCP.

Honestly the BEST thing to do would be to keep using the boot drive that came with the new machine and to do a clean install of all your software including FCP. Then manually move over any of your user data separate.
