Dell had a kiosk in one of the malls around here for a while… maybe they have one at yours as well.

C-dub,
I don’t believe FCP made use of the GPU until 5.1.2, and even then only to accelerate FX-Plug effects. I think we all expect a lot more in terms of GPU acceleration in FCP for version 6, but for now I don’t believe it makes much use of your graphical horsepower.Zak

Have you tried re-installing or updating your Blackmagic driver?

I haven’t used a 30″ to work with, but I feel like you’d be happier with two of the 24″ Dells. That’s still a lot of screen real estate, and you don’t need some crazy expensive graphics card to drive them. Obviously there are other benefits to beastly graphics cards (FX Plug comes to mind), but why spend all of that cash just to get a massive headache every time you sit down to edit.
The 24″ Dells have video inputs as well… that’s my suggestion.

Thanks guys,
That worked like a charm. I missed the HDV easy setups when I last looked. Those Blackmagic easy setups make that list much longer than the standard list. I also was confused at to whether I should have my output set to an HD setting (would have made sense had I seen the HDV easy setup) or an SD setup since I was going out to an NTSC display. Wasn’t sure what kind of overlap there was between FCP settings and the System prefs for the card.
The short version is I had FCP doing the wrong thing… thanks again for the help.

I just checked out the website for the plugin Jeremy suggests… that seems like a cool piece of software. If you don’t mind paying for something else, that may do you much better than Motion. If your new system is a Mac Pro or other Intel mac, I’d double-check that this is a universal binary. I didn’t see anything on the website.

Hey Enge,
If I were in your shoes I’d look to Motion rather than FCP to do what you need. You can make individual bezier shapes, and keep them together in a layer. Should do what you need for more basic rotoscoping. Adjusting the points over time is pretty easy… just turn on Auto-key (A), move your scrubber bar, and then move your points. If you do this regularly with Combustion then I’m surely not teaching you anything new. I’ve never used Combustion, so I’m just not sure what will be different in how you’d work by substituting Motion.

I would either double-check your motion project settings and / or export to QT. I’ve had a better experience with getting alpha from Motion into FCP by deselecting the pre-multiply alpha checkbox in the output settings tab of the export dialog.

Walter,
I thought we settled this a while ago.
FCP can indeed export to Quicktime with alpha… the process is just very nuanced.

I would guess the same applies to a generator like bars and tone. Like the name generator suggests, FCP is making that asset all on its lonesome, there is no QT based asset to your reference movie (I prefer the old FCP term too) to refer to. Try with a piece of real footage that has been captured to your machine and let’s see what happens there.
