I’m having big troubles with down-conversion out of my DeckLink card to and NTSC monitor.

I’m trying to down-convert HDV 1080i 60 to monitor using an NTSC monitor. My setup is a Quad 3GHz Mac Pro with 5 GB RAM, FCP 5.1.2, and a DeckLink HD Extreme card. My system preference for DeckLink is set to HD to SD letterbox, and my video output device from FCP is set to Blackmagic 8-Bit NTSC. My monitor is connected to the component out from the DeckLink card (no SDI on monitor).

All of that said, when video out is enabled in FCP all I see on the monitor are very aliased freeze frames. There is no playback on the monitor, it only updates when I stop playback.

    Thanks for the help,
    Zak

have you tried using an easy setup?
I believe the one you want is:
    blackmagic hdtv 1080i 59.94 – hdv
you can only output from decklink products if fcp is in one of their easy setups

    Hi Zak,

Many cameras that claim to output 1080i60 really output 1080i59.94. You will only be able to downconvert to NTSC if your camera is outputting as 1080i59.94 as this matches the 29.97 Hz frame rate of NTSC video (when you divide by two).

As Paul has already suggested, please try using the Blackmagic HDTV 1080i59.94 HDV easy setup and then see if you can play out to your NTSC monitor as that should work fine. Also ensure that playback of All Frames is enabled from the View menu in Final Cut Pro.

    Thanks guys,

That worked like a charm. I missed the HDV easy setups when I last looked. Those Blackmagic easy setups make that list much longer than the standard list. I also was confused at to whether I should have my output set to an HD setting (would have made sense had I seen the HDV easy setup) or an SD setup since I was going out to an NTSC display. Wasn’t sure what kind of overlap there was between FCP settings and the System prefs for the card.

The short version is I had FCP doing the wrong thing… thanks again for the help.

    Zak
