What are the specs of your Powerbook? It doesn’t matter what kind of machine captured the footage to drive if you’re trying to playback HDV on a system that can’t handle it. HDV is HEAVILY compressed, and just playing it back is very processor intensive. I don’t know that I’d even try on my Powerbook… that’s a MacBook Pro thing (assuming it has to be portable).
Obviously this isn’t great news if your Powerbook is what you have to edit on. I’d suggest going back to the G5 you originally captured on and recapturing as anamorphic DV. You’ll just have to turn firewire down-conversion on in your camera or deck. If you can get back to a G5, or better, you could online (I suppose that term is relative when you’re talking about HDV) your project, and then put out an HDV master.
If you have any graphics, you should wait until you’re back in and HDV timeline to incorporate them, or at least make them HD resolution and export an SD copy to use now.Hope that helps,

You may want to look at Motion rather than Livetype… I hate me some Livetype. Motion’s text behaviors are much more controllable than Livetype effects.

That sounds like par for the course. I would re-install all of your pro apps. An OS update is a big deal on a system that really needs to be stable. Update your OS to 10.4.8 then install FCS (or FCP and friends) again. Then update that as high as it will go. You have to have the universal version to get the latest updates (and they’re very worth it).

From reading the quote you posted, I wouldn’t think you need to do anything anywhere… especially if you’re watching this on an external display. They’re just saying that FCP and Shake display gamma differently. Neither actually does anything to the clip unless you tell it to via some filter or node. The article just says that the same clip will look different on your computer monitor from FCP to Shake. No worries, but good to know.Zak

I’m with Uli on this one. I wouldn’t even attempt to edit HDV on a G4. Set your video device to down-convert to DV for output. Work in DV. Maybe you’ll have an opportunity to online to DVCPro HD.

What are your export settings in Motion? I had problems with bringing QT with alpha from Motion to FCP (just didn’t look right) until I started exporting with straight alpha. Now I export as Animation QT with the “pre-multiply alpha” unchecked (options dialog > output tap). I’ve been very happy with this export setting. FCP brings the clips in, recognizes the alpha as straight, and all is well.Zak

This is a shot in the dark as I’ve never tried it, but could you use a text object as the basis for a particle emitter using some variant of the smoke emitters? I imagine your could futz with the birth rate a life settings to get the dissipation effect you’re looking for.

I had that rotation issue a while ago, but that was HDV to MPEG 2 via Compressor. The answer for me was to nest my HDV sequence into an anamorphic SD sequence for output. I’ve heard some people say to never use the export using Compressor command and to always go out to QT first. I love the feature. I’m constantly turning out new approval copies, and it’s one less set of files to keep up with.
Have you tried just exporting your sequence to h.264 from FCP using QT conversion? Might be worth a shot.

Depending on what format you’re working with, you may want to shoot for an SATA RAID and connect it with an SATA express card. I don’t have either of those or a MBP, so I can’t give you much in the way of real-world experience with this setup. The FW 800 solutions will be easier if they’ll do what you need.
