Smoke to text?

This is a shot in the dark as I’ve never tried it, but could you use a text object as the basis for a particle emitter using some variant of the smoke emitters? I imagine your could futz with the birth rate a life settings to get the dissipation effect you’re looking for.

I would suggest creating the smoke/fog, then animating a mask to collapse down to reveal another mask in the shape of the text, then reversing the first mask to extend back out to the amorphous smoke/fog.
