    Hi,
just a quick question really, does anyone know if anyone makes a rotoscope plug-in for FCP? The knid of thing I’m looking to acheive are simple cutouts for basic compositing using bezier splines which can then be animated. I’m used to doing this in Combustion but alas don’t have it installed on this here new system.

    Any thoughts greatfully recieved,

    Hey Enge,

If I were in your shoes I’d look to Motion rather than FCP to do what you need. You can make individual bezier shapes, and keep them together in a layer. Should do what you need for more basic rotoscoping. Adjusting the points over time is pretty easy… just turn on Auto-key (A), move your scrubber bar, and then move your points. If you do this regularly with Combustion then I’m surely not teaching you anything new. I’ve never used Combustion, so I’m just not sure what will be different in how you’d work by substituting Motion.

    Enge,

Check out https://www.silhouettefx.com/roto/. I’ve only played with the demo, but it should do everything you are asking about and the UI is easy to use.

    best regards,

I just checked out the website for the plugin Jeremy suggests… that seems like a cool piece of software. If you don’t mind paying for something else, that may do you much better than Motion. If your new system is a Mac Pro or other Intel mac, I’d double-check that this is a universal binary. I didn’t see anything on the website.

Thanks fellas for both suggestions. The roto tool plug-in does look great, but as with most things, I don’t hold the purse strings! Motion it is then..well for the time being anyway.

If you should ever need advanced capabilities, Silhoutte Roto is the bomb! There is a version that is stand-alone, AfterEffects (which we have), or for FCP. Its a little pricey BUT its worth the investment.
