    I haven’t tried doing what you want to do, but there is an excellent free programme by squared 5 called Mpeg Streamclip https://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html. This programme can convert to all sorts of formats. It can convert to AVI (windows friendly) or MP4.
    Also you may find that VLC https://www.videolan.org/vlc/ is a better choice to view in Windows than Media player.

    If you need to revert back to the original components of the compound clip – say to apply a different effect, change the text of a title, or add a new piece of video – simply select the compound clip and choose Clip > Break Apart Clip Items.
