No, the two cards do not NEED the PCI-X Slot. My Kona 2 is running in Slot 3 which is the non-PCI-X slot. I have my Fibrechannel card in Slot 4. The Kona 2 will operate in pretty much any slot. AJA actually recommends the Fibre card going into Slot 4 for the fastest data throughput.
At one time the Decklink HD Pro required Slot 4 to run HD, not sure if that still applies, you’ll need to check over in the Decklink forum.
The thing about the older model is the 8 slots for RAM vs. 4 on the newer model.

Nope, you don’t want those two cards in the same machine. Better use of funds is the K2 and the Io LA for your Analog I/O.
According to info I got from AJA, the Kona 2 does accelerate HDV functions like with DVCPro HD, but I don’t use HDV so I’m not really sure what it does. HDV has not impressed me at all and we work with DVCPro HD when shooting HD.

I’m getting Final Touch HD here in the next few weeks for coloring a broadcast series. It came highly recommended by the D.P. of the show who saw it at NAB. I especially love the fact that it comes with hardware controllers.
After I get a chance to use it, I’ll post with more information about it. As Peter notes, you can register on the Silicon Color website and join the forums.

Are you running OS 10.3.9 or OS 10.4.1? 10.3.9 seems to be causing a lot of problems to a lot of people and I have avoided that OS.
If you’re running OS 10.4, did you do a complete clean install and then install FCP?
If you’re still trying to run OS 10.3.8 then that could be a problem with FCP 5.

[Thomas Baxter] “I have my camera hooked up to FCP using a firewire cable…I have had no trouble with capturing video before, but it recently started having problems….under the play button on the Log and Capture window it now says “No Communication”….I dont really know what to do…..Any help is much appreciated! Look to see if you can get any of the original G5 Dual 2.0’s. They were $1,894 a few weeks ago and Slot 4 is a PCI-X slot in there. Search the usual places like macmall, clubmac, etc…. That’s what I did the day the new machines were announced. At first I was excited about the new machines, but when I looked more closely, they’re really not that exciting. So I purchase the original 2.0 with a 20″ Cinema Display for less than the Dual 2.7.
I’m hoping Dual Core machines may be here by the end of the year which should add some serious horsepower to renders and the like.
If Motion is not that important to you, the stock graphics card will work fine. Although I believe FCP 5 makes more use of the graphics card to help accelerate some functions. Others can comment on this.

Performance off the G-RAID is much better running 8bit than 10bit. I’m actually writing a review right now for both the G-RAID 500 and 800 units. Dropped frames are more prevalent when running 10bit and the RT functionality takes a dramatic hit.
If 10bit is your main focus of editing, SCSI or Fibre are the way to go.

Just FYI, it is my understanding that you require a license to place that at the beginning of any product. We were going to include one on a recent project until the client found out he has to pay a license fee to use the text and the FBI logo.
Without the license, the “warning” is useless in a court of law.
