Quit FCP, then trash the Thumbnail Cache. This will force FCP to re-draw the thumbnails when it relaunches.
FYI, I turn off the thumbnails in the timeline here. I don’t need them, I just need to see the name of the clip and when I have very short clips, the thumbnails often get in the way. Also, RT performance seems to improve, especially with longer projects.

As others have noted, your harddrive(s) are too slow. You need at least a FW800 RAID unit like the G-Tech G-RAID’s or a LaCie Big Disk Extreme. Those will barely get you one stream of 10bit playback.
Better than one, purchase two units and stripe them together. Much more reliable playback of 10bit.
Best option, move to Fibrechannel like the Medea FCR2X (2TB) array with 325mb/sec+ for tons of realtime even with 10bit SD.
Your machine is plenty fast enough. Before you blame the machine, do some research on what you’re trying to accomplish. The machine is only one part of the equation, drives are much more important with uncompressed SD and HD.

Matt, whenever I do a major OS upgrade, I wipe my harddrives clean and start all over from scratch. Install the OS, do all updates. Install the first piece of software (usually FCP), run all the updates, then launch the app to ensure that it opens up and operates. Then repeat for each additional application. Then if there is a hitch along the way, I know exactly what was just installed when it happened.
I have installed FCP Studio onto my 2nd G5 Dual 2.0 and so far initial testing has been very good. Next week I will be running a full project on it so we’ll see how that holds up and if that goes well, I jump right into a full HD project the week after.
Most of the issues seem to come from folks who either just upgrade their OS or do the clean install, but then just drag their apps back in via a clone application. The best and most efficient way to move from OS to OS and even from FCP version to FCP version is to simply start over from scratch. Takes a little longer on the install, but saves a lot of headache and downtime later.

Go to a local Best Buy or Circuit City and pick up a CD Album to keep all your discs in. I have two albums full of all my software so I don’t lose individual discs.
Unfortunately, you’ll need that disc to re-install and that’s really the only thing I can think of. All Apple pro-apps just run better when re-installed after a major OS update. Just upgrade to Motion 2 so you’ll have an install disc.

Did you re-install Motion? When upgrading an OS, you generally want to un-install, re-install all professional apps like Motion, Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, etc….
In fact, the best way to upgrade an OS is to wipe the harddrive completely clean and start all over. That’s what I’m currently doing with our second G5. I erased the harddrive, installed Tiger and am slowly installling and updating all software as I go. So far, so good with the new Final Cut Pro Studio, which includes Motion 2. If all goes well on that system, we’ll upgrade the primary G5 next.

I somehow remember you’re a big fan of Promax, which is why I’m surprised you haven’t checked out the FireMax series.”I’m still a huge fan of Promax, I just prefer other drive manufacturers. If Medea made FW800 drives, then they would be the only drives in my shop. Medea is my number one choice for anything storage related as they have never failed me in about 8 years or so of running them with Media 100 and FCP. Sure I’ve had individual drive units fail in the array, but I never lost a project or missed a deadline as I was able to limp the project to completion while Medea overnighted a new unit to me.
Firewire drives are going to be a smaller and smaller part of our facility in the near future as we’re switching over to Fibrechannel with the FCR2X and I’ll add a second unit before the year is out.

LaCie has been rock solid here for well over a year. Also heartily recommend G-Tech and WiebeTech units.
