    Hi all,
I bought Tiger and FCP studio and I am getting ready to take the leap. This is my bread-n-butter so I don’t want to move too quickly.
I want to know what your experiences are with Tiger and FCP Studio. Reading through the forum shows the typical odd problems, but overall… how is this combo working?

10.3.6 + FCP 4.5 HD have been very good to me and I have pushed my G5 farther than I could EVER expect a computer to go… I could definitely be a poster-boy for Apple and I defy a PC user to do the things I have done on my G5.

Sadly, the OS and apps are FINALLY starting to show signs of wear and tear… the writing is on the wall that it is time to wipe the drive clean and re-install everything.

Since there is no guarantee that the same OS and same FCP will work as well once I reinstall, I am faced with the question of whether it is time to upgrade….

    Your thoughts are appreciated…
    Matt

Matt, whenever I do a major OS upgrade, I wipe my harddrives clean and start all over from scratch. Install the OS, do all updates. Install the first piece of software (usually FCP), run all the updates, then launch the app to ensure that it opens up and operates. Then repeat for each additional application. Then if there is a hitch along the way, I know exactly what was just installed when it happened.

I have installed FCP Studio onto my 2nd G5 Dual 2.0 and so far initial testing has been very good. Next week I will be running a full project on it so we’ll see how that holds up and if that goes well, I jump right into a full HD project the week after.

Most of the issues seem to come from folks who either just upgrade their OS or do the clean install, but then just drag their apps back in via a clone application. The best and most efficient way to move from OS to OS and even from FCP version to FCP version is to simply start over from scratch. Takes a little longer on the install, but saves a lot of headache and downtime later.

Special thanks to Jerry Hofmann for giving me this great tip back when Panther came out.

I backup everthing with CCC to an external Firewire HD. Then booted from that External.

I then wiped the internal drive and booted from Tiger Install disk “C” Key during startup – Installed Tiger and then booted from Tiger 10.4. Repaired Permissions…. Then checked for Software updates and updated to 10.4.1 … Repaired permissions.

Then loaded all of FC5 Studio. took about 75 minutes. Repaired permissions and started playing with FC5.. assigned scratch disk locations and other prefernces – All went well. FC5 was stable and running well. I opened a couple of old project and everything looked good. I chose “Good” for the quality of the update of the projects.

Then I “migrated” just my applications from the external drive. Had to enter a couple of SN for some of the apps but other than that it went smoothly. The next thing I did was copy over files from my users folder on the backup drive. – iTunes song and iPhoto’s pictures into my new Users folder. Then I opened “Mail” and imported my old mailboxes from 10.3.9, I kept the Backup of 10.3.9 hooked up during the .
Ran “Cocktail” after I had downloaded the new Tiger version and was off and running…. NO PROBLEMs… Smooth Running “Knock on Wood”

I have completed two spots yesterday and today and I can report that FC5 works just great. I really like Soundtrack pro. I exported a couple of audio files out of FC as aiff’s – I did not export the files directly to STP in FC because that would have created a huge audio file – and did a very nice job of cleaning up a little background noise.

If you have not seen it take a look at the demo…

I was a little taken back by the new look of the “Log and Capture” The audio only functions to select Mono/Stereo were a little confusing for me… I have taken the books home to read over the long weekend..

I printed the spots out to Beta and had a wonderful time with the whole thing. I usually plan about a week to move into a new system… this took me 2 days…
