Go into your Sequence Settings, choose the DVCPro 720/24 preset, then go into the settings and change the frame rate to 25. It’s one of the choices in the drop down menu.
You can do the same with the Capture Settings or use the Frame Rate Converter to pull the 25 out of a 60 capture.
We shot 25 here for about 1/2 of our independent film to dial in the NTSC and computer monitor. I used the Frame Rate Converter to convert all the footage over to 23.98 for edit in a 720/24 timeline. It worked perfectly.

DVCPro HD is around 5 – 15 mb/sec depending on the frame rate. The smaller the frame rate, the smaller the file size. I’ve cut an entire 22 minute episode of a show here which required the entire timeline to be rendered because every clip was color corrected and then throw in all the animations that needed to be created I’m easily over 1 hour of footage. According to my array, it’s less than 2GB for the entire show and that’s 720p/60 (59.94)
Yes you do need that frame rate converter which you will see appear under the Tools menu to extract the various frame rates. Just download it from the Apple site. No idea on the NTSC / PAL thing though.

Have you gone into your preferences and adjusted the size of the text? I would assume this might affect the toolbar size as well. I haven’t played with my FCP 5 all that much yet other than simple tests on a 20″ display.

Do a search on AVID Xpress and you’ll find lots of discussions in this forum about this very topic.
Short answer. It costs more to move up the AVID path than the FCP path if you migrate to higher quality inputs / outputs such as uncompressed SD / HD. FCP suites are replacing AVID suites by the dozen.

I don’t think the basic FCP can turn off Fields when stopped, unless they added this preference to FCP 5. Some capture cards, like the Kona 2 has a preference to pause on Fields or Frames.

.mov is just the extension for any Quicktime movie, it does not represent a lossless format.
What represents a lossless format is what codec you use to export. You want that codec to match whatever you’re capturing / editing with to maintain “lossless quality.” If you’re cutting DV, then export with the DV settings. If you’re cutting 8bit uncompressed, then export with the 8bit settings.
The easiest way to do this is File > Export > Quicktime Movie. Note that it defaults to “Current Settings.” So whatever type of timeline you’re editing (DV, Uncompressed, etc…), that’s what FCP will use for the export.

Add more RAM. FCP maxes out at 2GB which is what you have listed in your machine. I run 3GB and 4GB respectively in both of my G5’s.
Also, if you’re trying to run FCP 4.5 while Motion is running / rendering in the background, FCP WILL be very slow.

Have you repaired permissions? Or you can change the default for the Kona 2 board from Mac Desktop to Black to stop it from projecting the desktop out on the monitor. If you don’t need that function, you can just change it to black.
About the only weirdness i have is that I generally have to log in to my machine twice upon startup whenever the K2 board is set to project the Mac Desktop out to the NTSC monitor. I log in, the desktop appears briefly, then the G5 kicks me back out to the Login screen. I know it’s Kona related because this only happens when the Mac desktop is selected on the K2.

Nope, files downloaded via iTunes can’t be converted to anything else.
