i need to pass some files to a friend so he can recut some footage and my understanding has always been to save or export as a .mov file since its a lossless format and im also under the understanding that i can keep saving in this format because i wont loss any quilty.
now while in an apple store a guy tells me that this is wrong and that i should “go to export, FCP file, setting, DV NTSC 48khz superlite”

so please someone tell me what the heck is going on, am i thinking the wrong thing when im passing around files as .mov and if so how should i move my programs from program to program?

.mov is just the extension for any Quicktime movie, it does not represent a lossless format.

What represents a lossless format is what codec you use to export. You want that codec to match whatever you’re capturing / editing with to maintain “lossless quality.” If you’re cutting DV, then export with the DV settings. If you’re cutting 8bit uncompressed, then export with the 8bit settings.

The easiest way to do this is File > Export > Quicktime Movie. Note that it defaults to “Current Settings.” So whatever type of timeline you’re editing (DV, Uncompressed, etc…), that’s what FCP will use for the export.
