Here is a Dynamic RT problem with still images.

I have noticed that a timeline showing a light green line which used to be fully rendered RT easily played out by FCP is now showing less than desirabe quality compared to rendered portions of the timeline.

Try this test: Load two high resolution still image (tif, jpeg etc)
Drop the images into a timeline.(withRT set to high the timeline has a light green line on it)
Put a motion move on the first image with keyframe A@45 and keyframe B@100 (I was using 1600×1200 jpeg file)
Place a dissolve between the shots and render only the dissolve.
Go to the headframe of the dissolve and the arrow back one frame to compare the quality betweent the two. You should notice a vast difference.

In 4.5HD there would be no distinction between these two frame with the same settings but somehow we last this ability now. FCP 5.0 does not even give you a choice to see the high rez image when stopped on the still frame, which is very useful for picking out detail in high rez still images. This was a major bonus in all previous versions of Final Cut..

go here to see the stills

There’s been a lot of discussion about this with Dynamic RT always dropping the quality of your footage until it’s rendered. That’s how Dynamic RT works, it drops the quality of the footage continuously to keep showing you RT effects with diminished video quality. The dissolve is clean because it’s rendered. Now render the stills as well and you’ll see everything in full quality.

You can turn off the Dynamic RT and go with the “old way” to work with the way you’re accustomed to.

David is right. I’ve been doing quite a bit of editing with large pic files (8k by 8k max) in 4.5 and 5.0 and there is a big difference in 5.0 in how they are handled. The good news is there’s an enormous increase in the quality of large pics rendered in 5.0 (in fact, the quality of any resizing is affected). The bad news is the renders are exteremely slow. In FCP 4.5, high-rez pics rendered by default in ‘fastest’ mode which is of very low quality. That’s why they look and play better in unlimited RT. When they are rendered, however, they look like crap since, as far as I know, there is no way to change the rendering quality of stills in 4.5. In contrast, FCP 5.0 has 3 render settings that affect the quality of rendered stills – ‘fastest’, the 4.5 default, which is fast but ugly; ‘normal’ and ‘best’. You can change these setting by control clicking your sequence and selecting the Video Processing’ tab; from there select your render quality from the ‘Motion Filter Quality’ pop-up menu. I’m afraid you may still be disappointed in how your stills look in RT, but at least you can finally render them in better quality than 4.5. This issue was forcing me to consider returning to my Avid system for final output until 5.0 came out.
